The Dawes Review 10: The impact of deep learning for the analysis of galaxy surveys

M. Huertas-Company et al.

Summary: The amount and complexity of data delivered by modern galaxy surveys has increased over the years. Deep learning has emerged as a potentially powerful solution for extracting scientific information from large and multi-modal data sets. It has had a significant impact in the field, particularly in computer vision tasks, but there are still challenges to be addressed before its massive deployment.

SDSS-IV DR17: final release of MaNGA PyMorph photometric and deep-learning morphological catalogues

H. Dominguez Sanchez et al.

Summary: This paper presents the MaNGA PyMorph photometric Value Added Catalogue (MPP-VAC-DR17) and the MaNGA Deep Learning Morphological VAC (MDLM-VAC-DR17) for the final data release of the MaNGA survey. The MPP-VAC-DR17 provides photometric parameters from Sersic and Sersic+Exponential fits to the two-dimensional surface brightness profiles of the MaNGA DR17 galaxy sample, while the MDLM-VAC-DR17 provides deep-learning-based morphological classifications for the same galaxies, with improvements compared to previous releases.

Galaxy Zoo DECaLS: Detailed visual morphology measurements from volunteers and deep learning for 314 000 galaxies

Mike Walmsley et al.

Summary: This study introduces Galaxy Zoo DECaLS, which provides detailed visual morphological classifications for galaxies within the SDSS DR8 footprint. Using deeper DECaLS images, volunteers were able to identify additional features such as spiral arms, weak bars, and tidal features that were previously unseen in SDSS imaging. The classifications from the volunteers were used to train Bayesian convolutional neural networks, resulting in accurate predictions of detailed morphology for all 314,000 galaxies.

The clustering of DESI-like luminous red galaxies using photometric redshifts

Rongpu Zhou et al.

Summary: This study presents measurements of redshift-dependent clustering of a luminous red galaxy (LRG) sample selected from the Legacy Survey imaging data set, and fits the clustering signal using the halo occupation distribution (HOD) framework. The HOD parameters are found to show little evolution except at the highest redshifts. New photometric redshift estimates and a new algorithm for dividing irregular survey geometries are developed, as well as a technique for finding best-fitting parameters in Markov chain Monte Carlo fitting. The study also releases a catalog of accurate photometric redshifts for objects with z < 21 over more than 16,000 deg(2) of sky.

Galaxy morphological classification catalogue of the Dark Energy Survey Year 3 data with convolutional neural networks

Ting-Yun Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, a galaxy morphological classification catalogue with over 20 million galaxies is presented, based on DES Year 3 data and CNN technology, achieving an accuracy of over 99% for bright galaxies. The researchers found that the Gini coefficient is the best parameter discriminator between elliptical and spiral galaxies.
