Inheritance of wood color, decay resistance, and polyphenol content of heartwood in full-sib families of Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi (Lamb.) Carr.)

Ikumi Nezu et al.

Summary: Japanese larch has different inheritance patterns for wood color, mass loss, and polyphenol content in heartwood. Higher heritability was observed in wood color, while mass loss and polyphenol content showed relatively lower heritability. Polyphenol content was negatively correlated with mass loss caused by white-rot and brown-rot fungi, and it was also correlated with heartwood color. Parents with lower L* and higher a* and b* in heartwood could produce progenies with higher polyphenol content, leading to higher decay resistance.

Lignans Extract from Knotwood of Norway Spruce-A Possible New Weapon against GTDs

Milan Spetik et al.

Summary: The extract from the knotwood of spruce trees was found to have effective antifungal effects against grapevine trunk diseases (GTDs) pathogens. In vitro experiments showed that the extract could inhibit the growth of different GTDs pathogens. In a plant experiment, the treatment with the extract significantly reduced the relative abundance of the pathogens in grapevines.

Advances in understanding Norway spruce natural resistance to needle bladder rust infection: transcriptional and secondary metabolites profiling

Carlos Trujillo-Moya et al.

Summary: This study investigated the defense and metabolic processes of resistant and susceptible genotypes of Norway spruce against needle rust disease. The key genes and metabolic pathways involved in spruce defense were identified, and the resistant genotype showed higher levels of resistance-related compounds.

Intraspecific variability of quantity and chemical composition of ethanolic knotwood extracts along the stems of three industrially important softwood species: Abies alba, Picea abies and Pseudotsuga menziesii

Maree Brennan et al.

Summary: Softwood species' knotwood is rich in lignans and terpenes, with D-pinitol also present in high concentrations at the crown top. Different softwood species exhibit variability in extractive yields and compositions, with potential bioactive molecules for anti-tumor properties and food-supplement markets.

Wood Extractives of Silver Fir and Their Antioxidant and Antifungal Properties

Viljem Vek et al.

Summary: The chemical composition of extractives in different parts of silver fir wood was analyzed, showing higher levels of hydrophilic extractives in knotwood and branchwood compared to heartwood and sapwood. Phenolic compounds extracted from knots and branches demonstrated inhibitory effects on wood-decaying fungi and molds.
