Aloe-Emodin Overcomes Anti-Cancer Drug Resistance to Temozolomide and Prevents Colony Formation and Migration in Primary Human Glioblastoma Cell Lines NULU and ZAR

Sabrina Staffieri et al.

Summary: The study found that the combined use of AE and TMZ has a significant inhibitory effect on the treatment of drug-resistant glioblastoma, with potential cytotoxic effects on cell growth. Additionally, the combined use of AE and TMZ can slow down the migration and colony formation of glioblastoma cells. Therefore, AE may serve as a natural adjuvant to enhance the effects of traditional drugs and overcome drug resistance in glioblastoma cells.

Reactive oxygen species mediated apoptotic death of colon cancer cells: therapeutic potential of plant derived alkaloids

Vinod K. Nelson et al.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide and is influenced by risk factors such as insulin and insulin like growth factors. Despite advancements in screening and treatment, mortality in cancer patients has not significantly decreased. Current treatment approaches face challenges like drug resistance and cancer re-growth. Natural products, specifically medicinal plants and derived phytochemicals, have potential for novel drug discovery. Cancer cells require high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) for cellular functions, and medicinal plants can enhance intracellular ROS to induce cell death. Alkaloids have shown promise in preventing and treating colon cancer with minimal toxicity to normal cells. This study provides an overview of alkaloids that induce ROS-mediated apoptosis in colon cancer cells and their potential clinical applications, along with other phytochemicals that induce ROS-mediated cell death in cancers.

Emodin induces apoptosis and suppresses non-small-cell lung cancer growth via downregulation of sPLA2-IIa

Fang-Yuan Zhang et al.

Summary: Emodin exhibited a novel anti-tumor mechanism by decreasing the expression levels of sPLA2-IIa and NF-kappa B pathways, thus inhibiting the proliferation of KRAS mutant cell lines in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This suggests that emodin could potentially serve as a therapeutic target in NSCLC.

Antiviral Activities of Halogenated Emodin Derivatives against Human Coronavirus NL63

Monika Horvat et al.

Summary: The study explores the impact of emodin derivatives on the activity against human coronavirus NL63, finding that halogenation of emodin can enhance its antiviral activity. The most active compound identified is the iodinated emodin analogue E_3I, which shows comparable activity to remdesivir but also exhibits some unwanted toxicity to Vero cells. Further research to modify the emodin structure may lead to analogues with improved anti-HCoV-NL63 activity and reduced toxicity.
