Alkoxy- and Alkyl-Side-Chain-Functionalized Terpolymer Acceptors for All-Polymer Photovoltaics Delivering High Open-Circuit Voltages and Efficiencies

Yu-Che Lin et al.

Summary: A new terpolymer acceptor with different side chains and thiophene units was developed and used in all-polymer organic photovoltaics. The devices showed increasing open-circuit voltages with higher molar ratio of one of the side chains. The optimized device with a specific blend ratio exhibited a champion power conversion efficiency of 16.7%, while maintaining better thermal stability compared to other blend ratios.

Phenazine-Substituted Poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthrolinedione): Electronic Structure, Thin Film Morphology, Electron Transport, and Mechanical Properties of an n-Type Semiconducting Ladder Polymer

Sarah M. West et al.

Summary: This paper reports the synthesis and properties of BBL-P, a phenazine derivative of ladder poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthroline) (BBL). BBL-P has a broad absorption spectrum with a lowest energy absorption peak at 840 nm in acid solution due to protonation-enhanced intramolecular charge transfer. Compared to BBL, BBL-P thin films have decreased crystallinity with face-on molecular orientations on substrates, resulting in a substantially decreased field-effect electron mobility of 1.2 x 10-4 cm2/Vs. BBL-P films also exhibit excellent mechanical properties with a Young's modulus of 11 GPa. These findings demonstrate the potential of BBL-P as a n-type semiconducting polymer and provide new insights into the effects of backbone structure on the electronic structure, thin film microstructure, and charge transport properties of conjugated ladder polymers.

Exceptionally high charge mobility in phthalocyanine-based poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthroline)-ladder-type two-dimensional conjugated polymers

Mingchao Wang et al.

Summary: This study overcomes the low charge carrier mobility issue of two-dimensional conjugated polymers (2DCPs) by synthesizing two semiconducting 2DCPs (2DCP-MPc, with M = Cu or Ni) with high mobility. The 2DCP-MPcs exhibit highly dispersive energy bands and small electron-hole effective masses, and demonstrate exceptionally high electron and hole mobilities at room temperature, surpassing those of linear conjugated polymers and 2DCPs. This work highlights the critical role of effective conjugation in enhancing the charge transport properties of 2DCPs and the great potential of high-mobility 2DCPs for future (opto)electronics.

Influence of the Side Chain Structure on the Electronic Structure and Self-Organization Properties of Low Band Gap Polymers

Sven Boelke et al.

Summary: The position of side chains in the studied conjugated low band gap polymers has a significant influence on the molecular orientation and interface properties, whereas the electronic structure is less affected. Annealing further affects the preferred molecular orientation, leading to a higher degree of ordering.
