Ceramic passive samplers for determining pharmaceuticals and drugs of abuse in river and drinking water

Nuria Fontanals et al.

Summary: Efficient monitoring of polar pharmaceuticals and drugs in water is crucial to ensure water safety. This study proposes the use of ceramic passive samplers (CPSs) to improve organic contaminant monitoring efficiency. Through stability and sorption experiments, the suitable sorbents for CPSs were determined. The deployment of CPSs in various water sources successfully detected several pharmaceuticals and drug residues.

Suspect, non-target and target screening of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in a drinking water system

Yu-Qing Wang et al.

Summary: Drinking water quality and safety are crucial for protecting human health. This study used suspect, non-target screening, and target analysis to identify and assess emerging chemical contaminants in a conventional drinking water system. The results showed efficient removal of most pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and pesticides in the system. The findings from this study highlight the strong capability of combined non-target screening and target analysis in identifying and assessing various organic chemicals in drinking water systems.

Occurrence and fate of pharmaceuticals, personal care products (PPCPs) and pesticides in African water systems: A need for timely intervention

Charles Obinwanne Okoye et al.

Summary: The occurrence of emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products (PPCPs), and pesticides in the aquatic environment has raised concerns about their negative effects on aquatic species and humans. PPCPs and pesticides, due to their toxicity and bioactive nature, have a higher potential to harm water systems compared to other contaminants. Limited data exists on remediation and control strategies for PPCPs and pesticides in African water systems, highlighting the need for adequate intervention strategies.

Ecotoxicological risk assessment of contaminants of emerging concern identified by suspect screening from urban wastewater treatment plant effluents at a territorial scale

Antoine Gosset et al.

Summary: This study conducted a territorial-scale ERA on CECs detected in the effluents of 10 WWTPs in a highly urbanized territory using LC-QToF-MS, focusing on pharmaceutical residue and pesticides. The results identified high risks for several CECs individually, with additional significant risks found in mixtures of CECs. The study highlighted the importance of assessing not only individual CECs but also their combined effects on ecotoxicological risks in urban streams.

Assessment of Human Pharmaceuticals in Drinking Water Catchments, Tap and Drinking Fountain Waters

Andre Pereira et al.

Summary: By analyzing 97 samples collected from 31 different sites in central Portugal, it was found that the concentrations of pharmaceuticals in drinking water were below the method detection limits, indicating that the presence of pharmaceuticals in drinking water is unlikely to pose a threat to human health. This study contributes to a better understanding of the Portuguese and European context of drinking water quality.
