Sensitive skin: Active ingredients on the spotlight

Marta S. Ferreira et al.

Summary: Sensitive skin cosmetic products commonly contain active ingredients such as niacinamide, oat, glycyrrhetinic acid and derivatives, and Laminaria ochroleuca, with a focus on reducing skin inflammation and enhancing skin barrier function. The scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of these ingredients and their mechanisms of action is limited, highlighting the need for further research in this area. Promising ingredients like niacinamide, panthenol, and acetyl dipeptide-1 cetyl ester show potential for improving sensitive skin conditions but require more robust clinical studies for validation.

Comprehensive characterization of naturally occurring antioxidants from the twigs of mulberry (Morus alba) using on-line high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with chemical detection and high-resolution mass spectrometry

Steve Thomas Pannakal et al.

Summary: An integrated approach using HPLC-CD and HPLC-HRMS was used to detect and identify key antioxidant compounds in the hydroalcoholic extract of M. alba twigs. Thirteen peaks were found to contribute to over 90% of the antioxidant activity, highlighting the efficiency of this method in identifying key compounds. Additionally, a new compound was discovered from the twig extract, showcasing the potential of M. alba as a source of antioxidants.

Xanthine Oxidase Inhibitors from Filipendula ulmaria (L.) Maxim. and Their Efficient Detections by HPTLC and HPLC Analyses

Mael Gainche et al.

Summary: This study identified spiraeoside, a glycosylated flavonoid compound from Filipendula ulmaria, with an activity approximately 25 times higher than allopurinol in treating gout disease. A strategy based on HPLC and an Effect Directed Assay method was developed to efficiently identify potent enzyme inhibitors in complex mixtures. The HPLC method could be used for evaluating enzyme inhibitors in quantitative assays using LC/MS experiments.
