The Impact of Hydroxyapatite Sintering Temperature on Its Microstructural, Mechanical, and Biological Properties

Marta Trzaskowska et al.

Summary: Hydroxyapatite, the main mineral of bone tissue, can be fabricated as an artificial calcium phosphate ceramic for bone defect treatment. The production method, especially the sintering temperature, directly affects the basic properties and biomedical potential of synthetic hydroxyapatite. This article focuses on describing and summarizing the key features of hydroxyapatite depending on the applied sintering temperature, including microstructural features, mechanical properties, degradation/absorbability, bioactivity, and biocompatibility.

Chitosan Composite Biomaterials for Bone Tissue Engineering-a Review

Jaundrie Fourie et al.

Summary: The use of chitosan-based biomaterials in bone tissue engineering has gained popularity among researchers. Chitosan possesses several favorable properties; however, its application in bone tissue engineering has been limited. To overcome these limitations, chitosan has been blended with other polymers (natural and synthetic), ceramics, and additives. These composite materials are used to eliminate unfavorable properties and retain favorable ones.

Bioactive Calcium Phosphate-Based Composites for Bone Regeneration

Marta Tavoni et al.

Summary: Calcium phosphates are widely accepted biomaterials that can promote bone tissue regeneration. However, addressing the challenges of regenerating critical-sized bone defects requires the development of bioceramics with enhanced bioactivity, bioresorbability, and mechanical performance. Effective manufacturing techniques to control the final multi-scale porosity of bioceramic composite scaffolds are crucial for ensuring osteointegration and bio-competent mechanical performance.

Chitosan-Human Bone Composite Granulates for Guided Bone Regeneration

Piotr Kowalczyk et al.

Summary: The search for the perfect bone graft material is crucial in material science and medicine. Human bone from tissue banks can be prepared for transplantation, providing a non-immunogenic matrix for cell repopulation. A granulate composed of beta-tricalcium phosphate, pulverized human bone, and chitosan has been developed for guided bone regeneration.

Biomaterial Properties Modulating Bone Regeneration

Yi Zhu et al.

Summary: Biomaterial scaffolds have gained attention for their potential in tissue engineering, supporting cell attachment and influencing cell behavior for tissue repair. They can also act as delivery vehicles to modulate regeneration processes. As potential bone graft substitutes, the physicochemical properties of biomaterial scaffolds play a key role in influencing cell behavior and outcomes in bone regeneration.

Ex vivo determination of chitosan/curdlan/hydroxyapatite biomaterial osseointegration with the use of human trabecular bone explant: New method for biocompatibility testing of bone implants reducing animal tests

Agata Przekora et al.

Summary: This study introduces ex vivo determination of osseointegration process using human trabecular bone explant for the first time, demonstrating that the tested biomaterial allows for the formation of a connection with bone explant. Live/Dead staining and CLSM imaging reveal that human bone explants can remain viable for an extended period during in vitro culture, making them a valuable model for studying biomaterial osseointegration and potentially reducing the need for animal testing.

Injectable silanized hyaluronic acid hydrogel/biphasic calcium phosphate granule composites with improved handling and biodegradability promote bone regeneration in rabbits

Killian Flegeau et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the successful incorporation of BCP granules with Si-HA and Si-HPMC hydrogels to create injectable, fast-hardening composites with similar mechanical properties. In vivo, Si-HA/BCP composites promoted bone regeneration while Si-HPMC/BCP composites led to poor bone healing in critical size rabbit defects.
