Recent advances in the structural design and regulation of lanthanide clusters: Formation and self-assembly mechanisms

Yun-Lan Li et al.

Summary: The design and synthesis of lanthanide clusters with novel topological connections and desirable properties have gained significant attention. Two common strategies, ligand-controlled hydrolysis method and anion-template method, are mainly used, but the assembly process is difficult to track. Therefore, new strategies for the design and construction of lanthanide clusters are urgently needed. Multi-dentate chelating ligands can quickly capture Ln(III) ions and form stable single-template primitives, enabling the identification of intermediates in the self-assembly process and facilitating the rational design and construction of lanthanide clusters.

Synthesis, Structure, and Zero-Field SMM Behavior of Homometallic Dy2, Dy4, and Dy6 Complexes

Pawan Kumar et al.

Summary: This study describes the synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties of three Dy-III complexes with different nuclearity. These complexes exhibit slow relaxation of magnetization even in zero applied field, and complex 1 and 2 show zero-field single-molecule magnet behavior. Complex 3 exhibits a double relaxation of magnetization. The ab initio calculations indicate the presence of a toroidal magnetic state in complex 2.

Largest 3d-4f 196-nuclear Gd158Co38 clusters with excellent magnetic cooling

Ning-Fang Li et al.

Summary: It is a meaningful and challenging work for structural and synthetic chemists to isolate nano-sized high-nuclearity cluster-molecules. In this work, two largest hetero-metallic nano-clusters Gd158Co38 were obtained via the multi-anions-template method. These clusters have a novel structure form of non-open Ln-containing high-nuclearity clusters and exhibit record-breaking magnetic entropy change.

Emerging Trends on Designing High-Performance Dysprosium(III) Single-Molecule Magnets

Tesfay G. Ashebr et al.

Summary: This Review discusses the recent trends in key synthetic strategies for achieving exotic magnetic properties and provides representative seminal reports. Special emphasis is given to monomeric high-performance Dy(III)-SMMs realized through crystal field, predominant bond, and organometallic approaches, as well as stimulating reports on endometallofullerenes and radical-bridged systems with strong magnetic coupling. The role of spin-vibration coupling in magnetic relaxation is also highlighted. More demanding theoretical studies are anticipated to predict promising molecules with magnetization blocking at practical temperatures.

Mingzhe Nie et al.

Summary: This study reported a luminescent single-molecule magnet with thermally activated delayed fluorescence based on metallofullerene DyY2N@C-80, constructed by integrating dysprosium and yttrium ions into a fullerene cage. DyY2N@C-80 exhibited magnetic and TADF properties, and forming a supramolecular complex with [12]Cycloparaphenylene enabled multiwavelength luminescence.

Influence of a Lanthanide Ion on the Ni Site of a Heterobimetallic 3d-4f Mabiq Complex

Stuart A. J. Boyce et al.

Summary: This study presents the synthesis and characterization of a 3d-4f bimetallic complex based on the redox-active macrocyclic biquinazoline ligand Mabiq. Various spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques were employed to analyze the electronic and magnetic properties of the complex, revealing a coupling between the Ni-Mabiq site and the peripheral Yb center. The complex nature of the exchange interactions and the multiconfigurational ground state comprising nearly degenerate singlet and triplet states were highlighted.
