Evaluation of Adsorption Efficiency on Pb(II) Ions Removal Using Alkali-Modified Hydrochar from Paulownia Leaves

Marija Koprivica et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) was used to convert Paulownia leaves (PL) into a carbonaceous sorbent for Pb(II) removal from aqueous solutions. Alkali activation using NaOH was performed to enhance the adsorption efficiency of the obtained hydrochar (PH). The results showed that the alkali treatment improved the adsorption performance of the hydrochar and the Langmuir isotherm model best described the experimental data.

Optimizing magnetic functionalization conditions for efficient preparation of magnetic biochar and adsorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solution

Jun Dong et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the effects of magnetic modification, precursor iron solution concentration, and pyrolysis temperature on the Pb(II) adsorption capacity of biochar. The results showed that magnetic functionalization can significantly enhance the adsorption efficiency of biochar for Pb(II). Biochar samples with higher pH values demonstrated stronger adsorption capacity.

Melamine sponge loading improves the separation performance of magnetic hydroxyapatite for Pb(II) adsorption

Ruifeng Li et al.

Summary: In this study, we developed an innovative method to enhance the separation performance of magnetic hydroxyapatite by loading it with melamine sponge. The loaded material exhibited better magnetic separation performance and had a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 139.28 mg/g for Pb2+ at pH 4.85. Adsorption was found to be a chemical, heterogeneous, and endothermic process, with different mechanisms contributing different proportions to the total Pb2+ removal.

Synthesis and application of amine-functionalized MgFe2O4-biochar for the adsorption and immobilization of Cd(II) and Pb(II)

Anyu Li et al.

Summary: This study successfully synthesized an amine-functionalized magnesium ferrite-biochar composite and investigated its performance and mechanisms for removing or immobilizing heavy metals in wastewater and polluted soils. The mechanisms in wastewater treatment primarily involved complexation and ion exchange, while in soils polluted by heavy metals, immobilization was achieved through electrostatic attraction, precipitation, and complexation. This new type of biochar composite has shown effectiveness in simultaneously removing and immobilizing heavy metals in wastewater and soil.

Applications of functionalized magnetic biochar in environmental remediation: A review

Jianhua Qu et al.

Summary: The synthesis methods of magnetic biochar (MBC) and its adsorption mechanisms for pollutants are comprehensively reviewed in this paper. Various modification methods for MBC, such as functional groups grafting, nanoparticles loading, and element doping, are discussed. The applications of modified MBC for removing hazardous contaminants and the influencing conditions are also investigated. Constructive suggestions for the practical applications of MBC in the future are provided.

Lead(II) adsorption on microwave-pyrolyzed biochars and hydrochars depends on feedstock type and production temperature

Christopher Nzediegwu et al.

Summary: Lead(II) adsorption using carbon-rich chars, produced at different temperatures from various feedstocks, was studied. The results showed that biochars outperformed hydrochars for lead(II) adsorption, with the highest adsorption for canola straw biochar produced at 500°C. Lead(II) adsorption in biochar was mainly attributed to precipitation as hydrocerussite and lead oxide phosphate, whereas in hydrochar it decreased due to interaction with aromatic carbon.

Enhanced adsorption of aqueous Pb(II) by modified biochar produced through pyrolysis of watermelon seeds

Waqas Ahmed et al.

Summary: Biochar obtained from watermelon seeds was successfully modified by H2O2 treatment and showed enhanced Pb(II) adsorption compared to unmodified biochar. The modified biochar exhibited promising potential for cost-effective Pb(II) removal from water/wastewater, in line with circular economy principles, and without adverse environmental impacts. Overall, the study highlights the importance of effective waste/by-product recycling for human and environmental health protection.
