Plectranthus Species with Anti-Inflammatory and Analgesic Potential: A Systematic Review on Ethnobotanical and Pharmacological Findings

Anti-inflammatory activities of Coleus forsteri (formerly Plectranthus forsteri) extracts on human macrophages and chemical characterization

Summary: In this study, the anti-inflammatory potential of ethanolic (ePE) and cyclohexane (cPE) extracts from Coleus forsteri on LPS-induced human macrophages models was investigated. The results showed that ePE and cPE extracts significantly inhibited the production of IL-6 and TNF-alpha, two inflammatory cytokines, in PMA-derived THP-1 macrophages. The production of QUIN, an inflammatory marker, was also reduced under ePE and cPE treatment in activated human monocyte-derived macrophages. Additionally, seven abietane diterpenes were identified from the cPE extract of C. forsteri, and their potential contributions to the anti-inflammatory activities were discussed.

Plectranthus zeylanicus: A Rich Source of Secondary Metabolites with Antimicrobial, Disinfectant and Anti-Inflammatory Activities

Summary: Plectranthus zeylanicus has been found to possess potent antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. The compound 7α-acetoxy-6β-hydroxyroyleanone showed strong antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and displayed disinfectant capacity comparable to a commercial disinfectant.

Antiinflammatory Medicinal Plants from the Ugandan Greater Mpigi Region Act as Potent Inhibitors in the COX-2/PGH2 Pathway

Summary: This study investigates the pharmacological activity of 16 medicinal plants in inhibiting proinflammatory enzymes, revealing a high correlation between traditional use and COX-2 inhibition. Among the nine most active COX-2 inhibitors identified, the ethyl acetate extract of Leucas calostachys showed the lowest IC50 value and the most promising selectivity ratio. The study also suggests that the mechanisms of action in these plants are not likely based on scavenging of reactive oxygen species and antioxidant activities.

Evaluation of tissue repair using phytotherapeutic gel from Plectranthus neochilus, Schlechter (boldo-gamba) and Cnidoscolus quercifolius Pohl (favela) in Wistar rats

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of a gel formulation from Plectranthus neochilus and Cnidoscolus quercifolius on tissue repair in cutaneous wounds in rats. The results showed that the 2.5% formulation had greater angiogenic potential and the highest fibroblast proliferation.
