Grape Pomace as a Natural Source of Phenolic Compounds: Solvent Screening and Extraction Optimization

Rafaela P. Rodrigues et al.

Summary: The optimization of phenolic compounds extraction from grape pomace using solvents was studied. Ethanol and acetone were found to be the best solvents for extraction. The main extraction parameters were optimized using a central composite design. The optimized conditions for ethanol extraction were 60°C temperature, 1.5 hours extraction time, and 25 mL/gdryGP liquid-solid ratio. For acetone extraction, the optimal conditions were 50°C temperature, 1.5 hours extraction time, and 25 mL/gdryGP liquid-solid ratio. The yields of phenolic compounds were increased by three-stage extraction.

From Industrial Food Waste to Bioactive Ingredients: A Review on the Sustainable Management and Transformation of Plant-Derived Food Waste

Yassine Jaouhari et al.

Summary: According to the United Nations, approximately one-third of the food produced for human consumption is wasted. The linear Take-Make-Dispose model is outdated and uneconomical, while circular thinking in production systems provides new opportunities. Recovering unavoidable food waste as by-products is a promising pathway, and utilizing last year's by-products rich in nutrients and bioactive compounds can drive innovation in the nutraceutical and cosmetic industry.

Development and Functionality of Sinami (Oenocarpus mapora) Seed Powder as a Biobased Ingredient for the Production of Cosmetic Products

Frank L. Romero-Orejon et al.

Summary: This research conducted a proximal analysis of sinami (Oenocarpus mapora H. Karst) seeds and examined their phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity. The chemical analysis showed high moisture but low protein, fiber, and lipid content. The extracts exhibited high in vitro antioxidant activity against free radicals. A gel exfoliant was developed using sinami seed powder, and different formulations were evaluated for potential use in the cosmetic market. The best prototype had a pH value of 5.25 and maintained viscosities of 700-800 mPa.s and 600-500 mPa.s under normal and stress conditions, respectively. The sinami seed has potential as a raw material in the cosmetic industry.
