Active and passive biomonitoring of trace elements, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and polychlorinated biphenyls in small Mediterranean harbours

Justine Castrec et al.

Summary: Pollution has a significant impact on coastal ecosystems, especially due to their proximity to human activities. Harbours, in particular, are exposed to both marine traffic and various forms of pollution. This study focused on evaluating the chemical contamination in Corsican harbours by measuring the accumulation of trace elements, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and polychlorinated biphenyls in marine organisms. The results indicate relatively low contamination levels compared to larger Mediterranean ports and suggest a low potential health risk for seafood consumers.

Water quality modelling using principal component analysis and artificial neural network

Aminu Ibrahim et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sources of pollution that cause spatial variation and develops the best input for water quality modelling using PCA and ANN. The dataset consists of 22 water quality parameters obtained from DOE. PCA generates six significant principal component scores (PCs) explaining 65.40% of the total variance. ANN models are developed to predict water quality index (WQI) with high precision, and the ANN A model has the best prediction capacity. These methods can be used for decision-making and problem-solving in river quality management.

Trace metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls in the surface sediments from Sanya River, China: Distribution, sources and ecological risk

Mengke Cui et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution status and potential ecological risk of trace metals, PAHs, and PCBs in surface sediments of Sanya River in China. The results showed that the sediments had minimal pollution and low ecological risk for trace metals. The detected pollution of PAHs and PCBs may not have significant adverse effects on the ecological environment in the foreseeable future. The overall quality of surface sediments in Sanya River does not appear to pose a serious pollution and ecological risk.

Zhifeng Wang et al.

Summary: An investigative biomonitoring study conducted along the coastal area of Laizhou Bay in China revealed the presence of organic pollution, with PCBs and NP being the main pollutants causing pressure on the clam Ruditapes philippinarum. The study found that there were differences in environmental stress among the sampling sites for R. philippinarum based on biomarker analysis.

Occurrence and spatial characteristics of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in sediments from rivers in the western Niger delta of Nigeria impacted by urban and industrial activities

Chukwujindu M. A. Iwegbue et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristic concentrations, spatial distributions, sources, and associated risks of 28 PCB congeners in sediments of rivers around a glass industry and power generating plant in the Niger Delta of Nigeria. The results revealed that the sediments were contaminated with various PCB congeners originating from Aroclor mixtures, paints, pigments, and other inadvertent sources, posing a high risk to the ecosystem.

Multivariate tools to investigate the spatial contaminant distribution in a highly anthropized area (Gulf of Naples, Italy)

Matilda Mali et al.

Summary: A preliminary study was conducted in the Gulf of Naples to evaluate the distribution of contaminants in seafloor sediments using multivariate techniques. The study identified three geographical sub-areas influenced by different contaminants and highlighted the impact of anthropogenic pressures and depositional basin on contamination trends. The supervised technique PLS_DA proved to be effective in handling the complexity of the large dataset acquired during the marine survey.

Occurrence, origin and potential ecological risk of dissolved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and organochlorines in surface waters of the Gulf of Gabes (Tunisia, Southern Mediterranean Sea)

Hatem Zaghden et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence, origin, and potential ecological risk of dissolved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in surface water samples from the Gulf of Gabes. The results showed a wide range of concentrations and identified the main sources of contamination. Risk assessment indicated low risk for PAHs and PCBs, but moderate to severe risk for OCPs.

Summary: The concentrations, possible sources, and ecological risk of PCBs and OCPs in Sele River were studied. The river was found to potentially contaminate the Tyrrhenian Sea, with higher concentrations of pollutants in sediment samples indicating historical contamination. The Sele River and its estuary were found to be at a potential risk.

Spatial distribution and ecological risks of polychlorinated biphenyls in a river basin affected by traditional and emerging electronic waste recycling in South China

Jingchun Shi et al.

Summary: The e-waste recycling activities in China have led to the discharge of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) into soil and aquatic environments, causing environmental pollution and ecological risks. The pollution levels were significantly higher in both the traditional and emerging recycling areas compared to their respective upstream countryside areas. The source analysis revealed that PCBs mainly originated from technical mixtures manufactured in Japan and the USA. The downstream areas, including the coastal area, were also affected by formal and informal recycling activities through river runoff, leading to adverse ecotoxicological consequences for humans and aquatic organisms.
