The role of injection fluid elasticity in microscopic displacement efficiency of residual non-wetting phase: An in-situ experimental investigation

Abdelhalim I. A. Mohamed et al.

Summary: Polymer flooding is an effective method for enhancing oil recovery in reservoirs. Recent studies have shown that using polymers with viscoelastic properties can further improve the displacement efficiency and result in additional oil recovery. However, the mechanisms responsible for these improvements at the microscopic level are not well understood.

The Synergistic Effects between Sulfobetaine and Hydrophobically Modified Polyacrylamide on Properties Related to Enhanced Oil Recovery

Qi Sun et al.

Summary: This paper studied the influences of different surfactants on the viscosity of two polymers, HPAM and HMPAM, and conducted experiments in different reservoir environments. The results showed that surfactants acted as electrolytes to reduce the viscosity of HPAM, while they formed aggregates with the hydrophobic blocks of HMPAM molecules, reducing the bulk viscosity. However, zwitterionic surfactant BSB was able to build bridges between different polymer molecules through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction, resulting in an increase in viscosity.

Effect of oxyethylene and oxypropylene groups on the interfacial structure and property of extended surfactants: Molecular simulation and experimental study

Hong-Jia He et al.

Summary: In this study, the interfacial structure and dynamic property of six alkyl polyoxypropylene polyoxyethylene ether carboxylates at the water/oil interface were investigated using experiments and simulations. It was found that C12PO15EO5C reduced the interfacial tension to the order of 10-3 mN/m. The simulations showed that long PO chains curled in a helical shape and formed a compact arrangement, while short PO chains could not. Additionally, long EO chains partially laid flat on the interface and partially extended into the aqueous phase, bringing the hydrophilic oxygen atoms close to water molecules.

Summary: In this study, a new type of surfactant, EAMC, was synthesized and its synergistic effects with KPS were investigated. The experimental results showed that the combination of EAMC and KPS had good interfacial activity and emulsification properties, and could reduce interfacial tension. The EAMC and KPS system showed potential for enhancing oil recovery.

Hydrophobically Associating Polymers Dissolved in Seawater for Enhanced Oil Recovery of Bohai Offshore Oilfields

Fei Yi et al.

Summary: Compared to China's overall oil reserves, the reserve share of offshore oilfields is quite significant. However, the offshore oilfield environment poses challenges for polymer use, requiring polymers with specific properties. This study explores a novel hydrophobically associating polymer (HAP) for polymer flooding in offshore oilfields, which exhibits improved solubility, thickening ability, and salt resistance compared to conventional polyacrylamide (HPAM) with equivalent molecular weight. The results show that HAP has the potential to enhance oil recovery in porous media.

New insights into the synergism between silica nanoparticles and surfactants on interfacial properties: Implications for spontaneous imbibition in tight oil reservoirs

Tiantian Zhang et al.

Summary: The role of nanofluids in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes and their application in tight sandstone reservoirs were studied systematically. The experimental results showed that stable nanofluids modified by different surfactants had potential for improved imbibition efficiency. Appropriate interfacial tension and oil contact angles were found to be beneficial for EOR potential. Anionic-nonionic and anionic surfactant nanofluids were suggested as better additives for sandstone reservoirs. The reduction of interfacial tension and alteration of wettability were attributed to the synergistic effects of silica nanoparticles and surfactant micelles. This research provides new insights into the interactions between surfactant nanofluids and their application in EOR.

The mechanism for lowering interfacial tension by extended surfactant containing ethylene oxide and propylene oxide groups

Zhong-Sheng Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the interfacial tensions (IFTs) between a series of alkyl ether carboxylates with different ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO) groups and n-alkanes were investigated. The results show that the PO group of the adsorbed surfactant molecules extends towards the oil phase in a helical winding manner, while the EO group arranges in an L pattern at the interface. Surfactant molecules with a large ionic head and PO group exhibit high IFT values, while those with sufficient PO and fewer EO groups have lower IFT values. The addition of NaCl can decrease the size of the ionic head and the C12PO15EO5C solution at optimized salinity can achieve ultralow IFT with hydrocarbons. However, electrolytes have little effect on the IFTs of surfactants with a dumbbell conformation at the interface, as the size of the linear EO group plays a crucial role.

2-D pore-scale oil recovery mechanisms of the anionic and nonionic surfactants

Hua Li et al.

Summary: Surfactants are widely used in enhanced oil recovery due to their ability to reduce interfacial tension, change wettability, and emulsify oil. This study compared three commonly used surfactants and found that they all effectively reduce oil-water interfacial tension, but differ in their ability to change wettability and emulsify oil. Two of the surfactants, amphoteric-alcohol ether sulfate and biological-lipopeptide, were found to improve sweep volume through emulsification, while the anionic-petroleum sulfonate primarily increased oil recovery by reducing interfacial tension.
