Non-Isothermal Crystallization Kinetics of PBSu/Biochar Composites Studied by Isoconversional and Model Fitting Methods

Katerina Papadopoulou et al.

Summary: Non-isothermal crystallization of PBSu/biochar composites was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, and it was found that the addition of biochar significantly affected the crystallization rate and activation energy of the PBSu polymer. The nucleation activity of the composites decreased with increasing biochar content, while the Avrami equation was limited in accurately predicting the crystallization behavior. The combination of the Sestak-Berggren model with the Hoffman-Lauritzen theory successfully predicted the crystallization behavior, revealing a complex mechanism involving nucleation and growth.

Synthesis and Study of Fully Biodegradable Composites Based on Poly(butylene succinate) and Biochar

Katerina Papadopoulou et al.

Summary: Biodegradable polymers, such as poly(butylene succinate) (PBSu) biocomposites, containing biochar (BC) filler can improve mechanical properties, thermal transitions, and biodegradability. The addition of BC enhances tensile and impact strengths, facilitates crystallization, and increases thermal diffusivity and conductivity. However, it also causes an increase in overall dielectric permittivity. Furthermore, the enzymatic hydrolysis degradation rate of biocomposites is found to increase with increasing BC content.

A Review on Current Strategies for the Modulation of Thermomechanical, Barrier, and Biodegradation Properties of Poly (Butylene Succinate) (PBS) and Its Random Copolymers

Mario Ivan Penas et al.

Summary: The impact of plastics on the environment can be reduced by using biobased and/or biodegradable materials as alternatives. One promising alternative is poly (butylene succinate) (PBS) due to its favorable properties. However, the high crystallinity of PBS poses challenges. This contribution provides a comprehensive review of the synthesis routes, modification strategies, and biodegradation behavior of PBS, aiming to position it as a viable and sustainable alternative to traditional plastics.
