Aqueous solubilization of hydrophobic compounds by inorganic nano-ions: An unconventional mechanism

Ioanna Chazapi et al.

Summary: The study found that COSANs act as efficient aqueous solubilizers of medium-chain alcohols in their monomeric state. Unlike surfactants, COSANs dissolve through a bi-dimensional anisotropic growth of COSAN/butanol co-assemblies. Additionally, COSANs/2-butanol co-assemblies can efficiently solubilize more hydrophobic compounds, offering new opportunities in many applied fields.

Biomimetic Photodegradation of Glyphosate in Carborane-Functionalized Nanoconfined Spaces

Lei Gan et al.

Summary: The removal of organophosphorus (OP) herbicides from water has been studied using various methods such as adsorptive removal, chemical oxidation, electrooxidation, enzymatic degradation, and photodegradation. In this study, a Zr-based metal-organic framework (mCB-MOF-2) was used for the adsorption and photodegradation of the OP herbicide glyphosate (GP). The mCB-MOF-2 demonstrated a high adsorption capacity for GP and selectively converted it to non-toxic sarcosine and orthophosphate under UV-vis light irradiation. These findings suggest that mCB-MOF-2 is a promising material for removing OP herbicides from water.

Metallacarborane Cluster Anions of the Cobalt Bisdicarbollide-Type as Chaotropic Carriers for Transmembrane and Intracellular Delivery of Cationic Peptides

Yao Chen et al.

Summary: Cobalt bisdicarbollides (COSANs) are used as selective and efficient molecular carriers to transport hydrophilic oligopeptides through membranes. They can permeate lipid bilayer membranes without causing membrane damage. COSANs transport arginine-rich and lysine-rich peptides effectively, but cannot transport small molecules or anionic cargos. The transportation mechanism is a molecular carrier mechanism, and living cell experiments show that a fluorescent peptide cargo can be delivered into the cytosol.

Structurally rigidified cobalt bis(dicarbollide) derivatives, a chiral platform for labelling of biomolecules and new materials

These ions show good binding motifs for incorporation into organic molecules through Huisgen-Sharpless (2+3) cycloaddition reactions, and can be separated into enantiomers using chiral stationary phases. The electrochemical testing results indicate that these compounds exhibit high peaks located outside the typical signals of biomolecules.

The key factors for counterion binding to the aggregates are the uneven charge distribution of cobalt bis(dicarbollide) clusters and the size compatibility between the counterion and the voids between the metallacarborane clusters. The study also shows that metallacarboranes can form larger nanostructures via a second aggregation mechanism.
