Ancient Rapid Radiation Explains Most Conflicts Among Gene Trees and Well-Supported Phylogenomic Trees of Nostocalean Cyanobacteria

Carlos J. Pardo-De la Hoz et al.

Summary: Prokaryotic genomes are mosaics of genes with different evolutionary histories due to horizontal gene transfers. Phylogenetic conflicts are not always caused by horizontal gene transfer, but can also be the result of incomplete lineage sorting and other evolutionary processes. In the cyanobacterial order Nostocales, conflicts among gene trees are likely due to incomplete lineage sorting rather than horizontal gene transfer. Rapid radiations play an important role in causing conflicting phylogenetic relationships in bacteria when using phylogenomic data sets.

An Exception to the Rule? Could Photobiont Identity Be a Better Predictor of Lichen Phenotype than Mycobiont Identity?

Jana Steinova et al.

Summary: This study reports a case of a three-species complex of red-fruited Cladonia lichens where mycobiont markers failed to separate the species, but photobiont identity corresponded better with lichen phenotype. This could either be an unusual case of lichen photomorphs or an example of recent speciation, where phenotypic differentiation precedes the separation of molecular markers. The authors hypothesize that association with different photobionts, possibly related to habitat differentiation, may have triggered speciation in the mycobiont species.

Providing Scale to a Known Taxonomic Unknown-At Least a 70-Fold Increase in Species Diversity in a Cosmopolitan Nominal Taxon of Lichen-Forming Fungi

Yanyun Zhang et al.

Summary: Robust species delimitations provide a foundation for investigating speciation, phylogeography, and conservation. In this study, the species boundaries of the lichen-forming fungal taxon Lecanora polytropa were investigated. Through the analysis of ITS sequence data and other genomic alignments, it was found that L. polytropa consists of 103 candidate species, with 75 corresponding to the nominal taxon. However, less than 10% of the candidate species were composed of specimens from multiple continents.

Neogene speciation and Pleistocene expansion of the genus Pseudephebe (Parmeliaceae, lichenized fungi) involving multiple colonizations of Antarctica

Isaac Garrido-Benavent et al.

Summary: The study reveals the presence of three partially admixed phylogenetic species within the Pseudephebe genus, with one exhibiting an amphitropical distribution and the others having restricted distributions. The Quaternary glacial cycles strongly influenced their distribution, with a possible Northern Hemisphere origin for one of the species.
