Pluronic® triblock copolymer-based nanoformulations for cancer therapy: A 10-year overview

Karine Cappuccio de Castro et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the literature on the use of Pluronic (R) triblock copolymers for drug encapsulation in the past 10 years. It focuses on the progress of drug delivery systems (e.g. micelles, liposomes, micro/nanoemulsions, hydrogels and nanogels, polymersomes and niosomes) and discusses the benefits of Pluronic (R) triblock copolymers as biological response modifiers and pharmaceutical additives, adjuvants, and stabilizers. The paper also highlights the advantages and limitations of developing site-specific targeting approaches based on Pluronic-based nanostructures in cancer treatment, as well as innovative examples for improving tumor cytotoxicity while reducing side effects.

Poly(oxanorbornene)s bearing triphenylphosphonium and PEGylated zinc(ii) phthalocyanine with boosted photobiological activity and singlet oxygen generation

Erem Ahmetali et al.

Summary: Polymers containing suitable photosensitizers show promising potential for managing microbial infections associated with resistant bacteria and biofilms. In this study, antibacterial poly(oxanorbornene)s were prepared with poly(ethyleneglycol) (PEG) functionalized zinc(ii) phthalocyanine (ZnPc) as a photosensitizer and membrane-targeting cationic triphenylphosphonium (TPP) units. By varying the ratio of TPP to ZnPc units, the monomeric state of the photosensitizer in water media can be precisely controlled, resulting in high singlet oxygen quantum yield and efficient photoinduced inactivation efficacy against bacteria. This research provides a promising strategy for the synthesis of polymers with near-infrared light-triggered activity.

BODIPY-Based Photothermal Agents with Excellent Phototoxic Indices for Cancer Treatment

Lukas Schneider et al.

Summary: This article reports six novel and easily accessible BODIPY-based agents for cancer treatment that exhibit both photodynamic and photothermal activities, and do not rely on the generation of reactive oxygen species for cytotoxicity. These agents demonstrate high photocytotoxicity and low dark toxicity in different cancer cell lines. Under hypoxic conditions, they exhibit oxygen-independent photothermal mechanisms, making them potential candidates for overcoming limitations in current cancer therapy.

Pluronic F127 and P104 Polymeric Micelles as Efficient Nanocarriers for Loading and Release of Single and Dual Antineoplastic Drugs

Ramon A. Gutierrez-Saucedo et al.

Summary: The potential of polymeric micelles formed by Pluronic F127 and P104 as nanocarriers for antineoplastic drugs DOCE and DOXO was investigated. The release profile and cell viability were evaluated under different conditions. The micelles solubilized and released significant amounts of drugs in a sustained manner, showing lower IC50 values compared to other carriers, indicating the effectiveness of these micelles as drug delivery systems.

New Advances in Biomedical Application of Polymeric Micelles

Ana Figueiras et al.

Summary: Nanomedicine, specifically the study of polymeric micelles (PMs), has emerged as a significant area of medicine in the last decade. PMs are colloidal dispersions of amphiphilic compounds that assemble into a core-shell structure, with a hydrophobic core and a hydrophilic shell. They improve the solubility and stability of drugs and can be absorbed and transported to the therapeutic target. PMs have high load capacity and are synthesized using a reproducible and cost-effective method. pH and temperature are commonly studied stimuli for enhanced drug release.

Probing the Interactions of Porphyrins with Macromolecules Using NMR Spectroscopy Techniques

Ilche Gjuroski et al.

Summary: Porphyrinic compounds are widely used in biomedical and technical applications due to their unique electronic structures and photophysical properties. NMR spectroscopy is a powerful method for studying molecular interactions between porphyrinic compounds and macromolecules, providing structural and dynamic information with atomic resolution simultaneously. Understanding and controlling the mechanisms of action and therapeutic efficacy of porphyrinic photosensitizers in medical applications require exploring their interactions with macromolecular carrier systems and physiological components.
