Multiple sclerosis and myelin basic protein: insights into protein disorder and disease

Vebjorn Martinsen et al.

Summary: MBP is an abundant protein in CNS myelin and is studied in relation to the pathogenesis of MS. While its direct role as a primary antigen in human MS is unclear, MBP and its functions in myelin formation and maintenance are linked to the disease. This molecule demonstrates the complex relationship between normal nervous system development and neurodegenerative disease.

Investigation of serum levels of orexin-A, transforming growth factor β, and leptin in patients with multiple sclerosis

Sepideh Moharami et al.

Summary: This study found significantly lower levels of orexin-A and TGF-beta, and significantly higher levels of leptin in MS patients compared to the control group. Additionally, there was no significant relationship between the BMI and the serum levels of orexin-A, TGF-beta, and leptin in MS patients.

Synthesis and biological evaluation of artemisinin derivatives as potential MS agents

Yan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of artemisinin derivatives were synthesized and evaluated. The results showed that ester compound 5 exhibited significant inhibitory activities on Th1 and Th17 cells, while also reducing the disease severity in a mouse model of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis. This research suggests that compound 5 has potential as a therapeutic inhibitor for multiple sclerosis.

4-Ethylguaiacol modulates neuroinflammation and Th1/Th17 differentiation to ameliorate disease severity in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis

Wen-Tsan Weng et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that 4-EG has therapeutic effects in EAE by modulating neuroinflammation, inhibiting Th1 and Th17 differentiation, and suppressing inflammatory immune responses in the CNS and periphery. This suggests that 4-EG, a natural compound found in foods, could potentially be developed as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of MS/EAE.

Multiple sclerosis patients have reduced resting and increased activated CD4+CD25+FOXP3+T regulatory cells

Nirupama D. Verma et al.

Summary: The study found significant shifts in CD4(+) T cell subpopulations in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, with reduced resting Treg, increased activated Treg, and increased effector CD4(+) cells. Additionally, some MS patients showed reduced CCR6(+)Th17-like Treg, which may contribute to the activity of MS.

Hericium erinaceus mycelium and its small bioactive compounds promote oligodendrocyte maturation with an increase in myelin basic protein

Hui-Ting Huang et al.

Summary: The extract from Hericium erinaceus mycelium (HEM) and its components HeA and HeS promote differentiation of oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) into oligodendrocytes (OLs) and enhance myelin basic protein (MBP) expression on neuronal fibers. These findings suggest promising functional effects of HEM and its ingredients in promoting OL maturation and potential for myelination in neurodevelopmental disorders.
