Effects of Sparganii Rhizoma on Osteoclast Formation and Osteoblast Differentiation and on an OVX-Induced Bone Loss Model

Sungyub Lee et al.

Summary: Postmenopausal osteoporosis is caused by an imbalance between osteoclasts and osteoblasts, leading to severe bone loss. This study found that Sparganii Rhizoma (SR) inhibits osteoclast differentiation and promotes osteoblast differentiation, while also protecting against bone loss in an osteoporosis model. These findings suggest that SR may have potential as a herbal medicine for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Botanicals in Postmenopausal Osteoporosis

Wojciech Slupski et al.

Summary: Osteoporosis is a systemic bone disease characterized by reduced bone mass and deterioration of bone microarchitecture. Conventional anti-osteoporotic pharmaceutics have side effects, leading many women to seek botanicals as an alternative therapy. Plant-derived compounds are being increasingly researched as potential maintenance for bone health in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women.

Role of OSCAR Signaling in Osteoclastogenesis and Bone Disease

Iva R. Nedeva et al.

Summary: Formation of mature bone-resorbing cells through osteoclastogenesis is essential for bone tissue remodeling and repair, but aberrations in this process can lead to excessive bone degradation in aging and disease. While RANK interaction with RANKL is the main pathway for osteoclastogenesis, additional co-stimulatory signals, such as OSCAR, may be necessary for the expression of osteoclast-specific genes and the activation of osteoclasts.
