Airborne environmental DNA for terrestrial vertebrate community monitoring

Christina Lynggaard et al.

Summary: Biodiversity monitoring at the community scale is critical for understanding the impacts of environmental and human activities on natural ecosystems. This study demonstrates that airborne environmental DNA (eDNA) can be a powerful tool for studying and monitoring terrestrial vertebrate communities. The researchers collected air samples from different locations in a zoo and used eDNA analysis to detect diverse vertebrate species. They found that the distance to the sampling device and animal biomass influenced the detection probability.

Survival of the Richest, not the Fittest: How attempts to improve governance impact African small-scale marine fisheries

Ifesinachi Okafor-Yarwood et al.

Summary: The African Union prioritizes the sustainable use of fisheries resources in developing the Blue Economy. However, the current fisheries governance mechanisms in Africa tend to constrain small-scale fisheries while failing to regulate the industrial fisheries sector, leading to the marginalization of small-scale fisheries. Despite higher incidences of Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated fishing in industrial fisheries, governance mechanisms continue to favor the industrial sector over small-scale fisheries.

A National Scale BioBlitz Using Citizen Science and eDNA Metabarcoding for Monitoring Coastal Marine Fish

Sune Agersnap et al.

Summary: This study combined citizen science and eDNA metabarcoding to map coastal fish biodiversity in Denmark at a national scale. The results obtained high sample return rate and rich species information. The comparison with century-long observations confirmed the correlation between eDNA data and fish richness and community compositions.

Reliable eDNA detection and quantification of the European weather loach (Misgurnus fossilis)

Rein Brys et al.

Summary: The European weather loach faces dramatic population declines and regional extinction, prompting the development of new eDNA methods for accurate monitoring. The study identified 12 sites with relatively dense populations and 31 sites with weaker positive signals. By combining DNA quantity estimates and field sampling, it was concluded that weak positive sites likely still harbor the species.

Application of DNA mini-barcoding reveals illegal trade in endangered shark products in southern Africa

T. A. Asbury et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the illegal shark fin trade in southern Africa predominantly involves threatened species, emphasizing the necessity for enhanced trade monitoring and suggesting that more widespread genetic sampling can help eliminate illegal trade. However, a major limitation to DNA barcoding lies in the lack of curated voucher specimens available on public databases, highlighting the need for a concerted effort to create reliable curated sequence data for a more comprehensive evaluation of elasmobranch trade regionally.

Methodology of fish eDNA and its applications in ecology and environment

Shuping Wang et al.

Summary: Fish environmental DNA (eDNA) studies have advanced significantly over the past decade, providing valuable insights for monitoring fish populations. Despite existing reviews on eDNA, a systematic review on methodology and applications of fish eDNA in ecology and environment is lacking. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of fish eDNA literature, discusses relevant experiments, and highlights the potential impact of eDNA technology on global conservation efforts.

Environmental DNA as a tool for monitoring Antarctic vertebrates

Lucy Howell et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the potential of using environmental DNA methods for biodiversity monitoring and conservation genetics research in Antarctica. Most Antarctic eDNA studies have focused on microbial metabarcoding, with limited research on vertebrates, but some creative examples have effectively used eDNA for studying vertebrates. Portable sequencing technologies have the potential to shape the future of eDNA research in Antarctica, which could be a valuable tool for assessing, monitoring, and conserving biodiversity in the region.

Seasonality, DNA degradation and spatial heterogeneity as drivers of eDNA detection dynamics

Christopher R. Troth et al.

Summary: In this study, we found that the concentrations of environmental DNA are influenced by seasonal variability, degradation rates, and micro-habitat heterogeneity, which can result in uncertainties in across-site and time comparisons using environmental DNA.
