Seasonal dynamics of Anopheles stephensi and its implications for mosquito detection and emergent malaria control in the Horn of Africa

Charles Whittaker et al.

Summary: The invasion of the malaria vector Anopheles stephensi in the Horn of Africa poses a threat to malaria control efforts across the continent. This study finds that the seasonal dynamics of An. stephensi are not well predicted by rainfall patterns, but are associated with temperature and land use. Timing entomological surveys to coincide with rainy periods is unlikely to improve the detection of An. stephensi, and indoor residual spraying campaigns during peak rainfall offer little improvement in reducing disease burden.

Evolutionary and ecological drivers of local adaptation and speciation in a North American avian species complex

Summary: This study investigates the divergence process of Mexican ducks and mallards using partial-genome sequence data. The results indicate that Mexican ducks originally diverged in glacial refugia and subsequent environmental selective pressures played a key role in their divergence. Furthermore, cyclical demographic patterns and gene flow with mallards were observed in Mexican duck populations. Sexual selection also acted on phenotypic traits as a co-evolutionary process.

Spatial population genomics of a recent mosquito invasion

Summary: Population genomic approaches have been used to study the invasion of Aedes albopictus in the Torres Strait Islands of Australia in 2004, revealing spatial genetic structure within populations and direct gene flow from Papua New Guinea. The study also identified recent movement between islands and introgression of linked alleles from PNG, indicating a highly interconnected invasive system.

The genomic signal of local environmental adaptation in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes

Kelly L. Bennett et al.

Summary: Despite low population structure and high gene flow in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes across Panama, excepting the province of Bocas del Toro, our study identified 128 candidate SNPs within 17 genes showing a strong genomic signal of local environmental adaptation. This adaptive variation occurred across different geographic scales and environmental conditions, with temperature and vegetation playing important roles in predicting adaptive genomic variation in Ae. aegypti.

Summary: The study explores hybridization among introduced feral Rock Pigeon and Eurasian Collared-Dove and native White-winged and Mourning doves in southwestern North America, finding limited evidence of extensive hybridization but detecting six putative contemporary late-stage hybrids involving the Mourning Dove. The research highlights the importance of using multiple marker types to infer complex evolutionary histories and considers important factors when analyzing populations that were recently established or of domestic origins.

Role of Anopheles stephensi Mosquitoes in Malaria Outbreak Djibouti, 2019

Summary: Anopheles stephensi mosquitoes in Djibouti are potentially causing a rise in malaria incidence by sharing breeding sites with Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus. Additionally, there is documented resistance of Plasmodium falciparum to dihydroartemisinin/piperaquine in this country.
