Nanomachining characteristics of textured polycrystalline NiFeCo alloy using molecular dynamics

Dinh-Quan Doan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the grinding process of a polycrystalline NiFeCo alloy through MD simulation and analyzes the factors that affect the grinding mechanics. The results show that machining velocity, grinding depth, and tool radius significantly influence grinding force and temperature, with smooth surface grinding exhibiting the highest values. Local shear strain and stress play a crucial role in explaining the deformation mechanism, with grain boundaries controlling the deformation behavior.

Study on the Vertical Ultrasonic Vibration-Assisted Nanomachining Process on Single-Crystal Silicon

Jiqiang Wang et al.

Summary: Ultrasonic vibration-assisted nanomachining on hard-brittle silicon crystal leads to larger subsurface damage compared with static scratching. The study demonstrates that the material becomes significantly harder than the pristine material after plastic deformation during the machining process. This research is important for guiding ultrasonic vibration-assisted machining of hard-brittle materials at the nanoscale level.

Revealing nanoscale material deformation mechanism and surface/subsurface characteristics in vibration-assisted nano-grinding of single-crystal iron

Weiwei Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of ultrasonic vibration on the vibration-assisted nanogrinding process of single-crystal iron using a molecular dynamics model. The results show that vibration changes the distribution of dislocations in the plastic zone, leading to fluctuations in material accumulation, temperature, dislocation formation, and subsurface damage. The details of plastic deformation, such as dislocation movement and phase transformation, vary with different vibration frequencies. The reduction in the projected contact area is the main cause for the decrease in grinding force.

Deformation and machining mechanism of nanocrystalline NiCoCrFe high entropy alloys

Thi-Xuyen Bui et al.

Summary: The effects of composition, grain sizes, and cutting depths on the deformation behaviors and sub-surface damages of scratched NiCoCrFe high entropy alloys are investigated. The results show that the alloy composition and grain sizes affect the ability to remove atoms during the cutting process, and the grain boundaries play a vital role in blocking dislocation propagation and stacking fault development.

Numerical investigation on material removal mechanism in elliptical vibration cutting of single-crystal silicon

Changlin Liu et al.

Summary: The study utilized molecular dynamics simulation to investigate the material removal mechanism in single crystal silicon EVC, revealing a shift from extrusion to shear as the dominant material removal mechanism within a single vibration cycle. Furthermore, the formation mechanism of subsurface damage in extrusion and shear stages was analyzed, along with the factors influencing the extrusion to shear transition.

Machining mechanism and deformation behavior of high-entropy alloy under elliptical vibration cutting

Dinh-Quan Doan et al.

Summary: The study revealed that both strain and stress are concentrated at the contact area between the workpiece and cutting tool, as well as at the grain boundaries, under both conventional cutting and ultrasonic elliptical vibration-assisted cutting. Molecular dynamics simulation showed that the temperature of the workpiece is significantly higher under UEVAC, which can facilitate phase transformation and make the cutting process easier. Additionally, the deformation behavior of polycrystalline materials is strongly influenced by grain boundaries, and the cutting force under UEVAC decreases with increasing vibration frequency and amplitude ratio.

Simulations of primary damage in a High Entropy Alloy: Probing enhanced radiation resistance

O. R. Deluigi et al.

Summary: Research has shown that high entropy alloys exhibit a lower average number of defects in the early stages of radiation damage response compared to pure Ni, but there is no significant difference in defect evolution during the cascade, indicating that the radiation resistance of high entropy alloys may not be due to a reduction in primary damage caused by chemical disorder, but probably caused by longer-time defect evolution.

Phase transformation and subsurface damage formation in the ultrafine machining process of a diamond substrate through atomistic simulation

Van-Thuc Nguyen et al.

Summary: This report examines the impact of machining depth, velocity, temperature, multi-machining, and grain size on the tribological properties of a diamond substrate. The presence of graphite atoms can enhance the machining process by reducing force, and the number of graphite atoms is affected by machining speed and substrate temperature. Multi-machining on a surface results in a rough, amorphous, and deformed surface, with a higher rate of deformation but a lower rate of graphite atoms generation when done vertically multiple times. Additionally, increasing grain size leads to larger graphite clusters, higher elastic recovery rate, and higher temperature but lower force and pile-up height.
