A theoretical and experimental study of the effects of NaCl and the competitive chemisorption of ions at the surface sites in the context of galena flotation

Anna M. Nowosielska et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of increasing NaCl concentration on the flotation of galena. The recovery of galena by collector-less flotation improves with higher NaCl concentrations. The chemisorption models developed can predict the potentials on the surface of galena and an air bubble for a range of NaCl concentrations and pH. The experimental results are supported by the theoretical predictions of the models.

Considering Specific Ion Effects on Froth Stability in Sulfidic Cu-Ni-PGM Ore Flotation

Malibongwe S. Manono et al.

Summary: The mining and mineral processing of Cu-Ni-PGM sulfide ores in South Africa face challenges of water shortage in semi-arid regions. To address this, mineral concentrators utilize the recycling and re-use of process water. However, the higher concentrations of ions in recirculated water may affect froth stability. This study investigates the effects of different ions in process water on froth stability and finds that divalent inorganic electrolytes have a greater impact on froth and foam stability compared to monovalent inorganic electrolytes.

The surface potential explains ion specific bubble coalescence inhibition

Timothy T. Duignan

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of ions preventing bubble coalescence in water, finding that the Gibbs-Marangoni pressure explains this phenomenon, and the distribution of ions and surface potential affect this pressure, thereby impacting the ability of bubble coalescence.

Fundamental and flotation techniques assessing the effect of water quality on bubble-particle attachment of chalcopyrite and galena

L. L. October et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of water quality on bubble-particle attachment of selected sulfide minerals using an Automated Contact Time Apparatus (ACTA). Results showed qualitative similarities between ACTA and classical microflotation techniques, but significant quantitative differences. Additionally, an increase in zeta potential of minerals was observed as the concentration of inorganic electrolytes in the water increased.

The effects of water recycling on flotation at a North American concentrator

A. Di Feo et al.

Summary: The use of thickener tank overflow water for flotation can result in higher pyrrhotite recovery due to increased bubble surface area flux and hydrophilic oxidative species. Non-sulphide gangue recovery remains similar across tests, mainly influenced by water entrainment. Nickel and copper recoveries increase at higher levels of thickener tank overflow water recirculation due to higher total dissolved solids and bubble surface area flux.
