The Effect of Ultrasound Treatment on Oil Agglomeration of Barite

K. Esmeli

Summary: This study investigated the impact of ultrasonic treatment on oil agglomeration of barite ore. The use of ultrasound improved the agglomeration efficiency of barite during oil agglomeration and reduced the consumption of oleate and kerosene. However, using ultrasound only during the agglomeration stage had a negative effect on agglomeration recovery.

Hydrophobic Flocculation of Coal Particles Controlled by Mechanical Stirring

Jing Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of mechanical energy input amount and input mode on the hydrophobic flocculation of coal particles in the stirring field. Through flotation tests and fluid simulation analysis, it is confirmed that increasing stirring speed promotes the hydrophobic flocculation of coal particles, and the axial flow field in the full baffle stirred tank is more conducive to flocculation occurrence.

Flotation response of a bituminous coal sample in presence of a pyrolitic oil recycled from used car tires

Iman Hasanizadeh et al.

Summary: The role of pyrolitic oil (PO) produced from used car tires in coal flotation was evaluated through experimental and statistical analyses. The addition of PY increased the ash content and total yield of the final concentrate in a non-linear trend within certain ranges. The non-selective interaction between PO and pine oil molecules, as well as the competitive adsorption between PO and diesel oil on coal particle surfaces, were identified as the main factors contributing to the curved behavior of flotation responses. The negative effect of PO on the ash content was attributed to the interaction between the hydrophilic groups in PO structure and the oxide nature of non-combustible materials in coal particles.

Effect of Magnesium Species on Cationic Flotation of Quartz from Hematite

Deisiane Ferreira Lelis et al.

Summary: In the Quadrilatero Ferrifero Region in Brazil, the utilization of recycled water from tailing dams is commonly used for the reverse cationic flotation of siliceous iron ores. However, the presence of dolomite in the ore concentrates leads to a loss of selectivity in the separation of quartz from Fe-bearing minerals, resulting in lower quality ores for blast furnace pellets. In order to improve the flotation process, fundamental studies were conducted on the effect of Ca and Mg ions on cationic flotation with quartz and hematite minerals. It was found that the addition of Mg ions had a stronger depression effect on both minerals compared to starch. A reduction in Mg concentration in the water used for flotation is recommended.

Effect of high-speed shear flocculation on the flotation kinetics of ultrafine microcrystalline graphite

Chao Ni et al.

Summary: A novel process combining high-speed shear flocculation and flotation was proposed to beneficiate ultra fine microcrystalline graphite. The flotation rate of MG in the SFF process is about 3 times as fast as that in the conventional flotation process, due to the increase in aggregate size and improved hydrophobicity of graphite particles. The SFF process shows great potential in industrial applications for separating ultrafine MG.

Evolution of coal flocs during flocculation under different stirring velocities

Qiming Zhuo et al.

Summary: A dynamic floc measurement system was developed to analyze the development of coal flocs, showing that flocs grew rapidly at the beginning of flocculation and were larger at low stirring velocities compared to high stirring velocities. It was also found that high stirring velocities could cause irreversible damage to flocs, and there exists an optimal stirring velocity to enhance the size and structure of flocs. This research provides an effective way to study floc characteristics and their change process under different stirring velocities.

Hybrid CFD-experimental investigation into the effect of sparger orifice size on the metallurgical response of coal in a pilot-scale flotation column

Summary: Although extensively studied in the literature, this paper highlights the inadequate consideration of the hydrodynamic impact of orifice properties in column flotation cells. It demonstrates the influence of different sparger orifice sizes on metallurgical responses and fluid dynamics, indicating optimal performance with a 3 mm orifice size. Decreasing to 1 mm reduces carrying capacity while increasing to 7 mm intensifies turbulence but also leads to excessive entrainment of high ash fines.

Technological assessments on recent developments in fine and coarse particle flotation systems

Ahmad Hassanzadeh et al.

Summary: This paper critically evaluates the two different strategies in ore flotation processing: the classical mechanical flotation cells and the new flotation apparatuses. Through a comprehensive comparative study, it is found that the traditional mechanical cells are suitable for fine particle flotation, while the new apparatuses such as Jameson and RefluxTM flotation cells are highly efficient in recovering fine particles. In addition, fluidized bed and HydroFloatTM cells are suitable for coarse particle recovery.

Abdolreza Bahmani-Ghaedi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of flocculant type and concentration on the residual flocculant in circulating water during the sedimentation of iron ores. The results showed that the anionic flocculant demonstrated desirable settling efficiency due to its strong hydrogen bonding property and large flocs formed. The optimum conditions for maximum settling rate and minimum flocculant concentration in the circulated water were found to be 9% solid content, 20 g/t high molecular anionic polyacrylamide (APAM), and pH of 8.3.

A New Perspective on the Understanding of High-Intensity Conditioning: Incompatibility of Conditions Required for Coarse and Fine Coal Particles

Yuexian Yu et al.

Summary: This study examined the incompatibility of high-intensity conditioning (HIC) conditions required for fine and coarse coal particles. The effects of stirring speed and time on the recovery of particles were investigated. The results showed that the optimum stirring conditions for surface cleaning (SC) flotation differed from those of HIC flotation. SC flotation consumed less energy but failed to promote the recovery of fine particles. Fine particles consumed less energy than coarse particles. It is suggested to separately perform SC, reagent dispersion, and particle-reagent collision.

A Review on the Application of Starch as Depressant in Iron Ore Flotation

Swagat S. Rath et al.

Summary: The depletion of high-grade iron ores has led to the need for beneficiation of low-grade iron ores. Flotation is considered the most efficient method to increase the iron content of fine-grained ores that do not respond to gravity or size classification. Depressants are crucial in iron ore reverse flotation as they selectively make iron oxides hydrophilic and prevent them from entering the gangue-rich froth phase. Starch is widely used as a depressant in iron ore flotation. This paper reviews the origin and chemistry of starch, the mechanism of starch-iron oxide interaction, and the application of different types of starch and their alternatives in iron ore flotation.

Successful separation of the two minerals was achieved through thermal pretreatment, with the surface oxidation of chalcopyrite being a key factor.

Summary: This study established a micro-scale observation system to investigate the interaction between flocs and bubbles in the separation zone of the dissolved air flotation process. It was found that small flocs have a higher unit buoyancy and collision probability with bubbles, enabling them to capture bubbles and accumulate enough buoyancy for efficient flotation separation in a short time. The simulation and practical verification both support the favorable role of small flocs in achieving high separation efficiency in the flotation process.
