Eikenella corrodens infections in human: Reports of six cases and review of literatures

Li Li et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics of six cases of Eikenella corrodens infection in Ningbo First Hospital, China, in the past two years. The results showed that the infections were mostly deep and required surgical drainage or resection along with antimicrobial treatment. After treatment, most patients were discharged and recovered well. These cases were consistent with previous reports on E. corrodens infections.

Nitrogen plasma-mediated deposition of silver onto MoS2 towards robust nanozyme with enhanced catalysis for colorimetric assay of hydrogen sulfide in aquaculture water

Sheng Zhang et al.

Summary: Ultra-thin MoS2 nanosheets were treated by nitrogen plasma to deposit silver and form N/Ag@MoS2 nanozymes for the detection of hydrogen sulfide in aquaculture water. The N/Ag@MoS2 nanozymes showed significantly enhanced catalytic activity and could react with H2S at different concentrations. This study provides a new strategy for the design of nanozymes for various applications in biomedical, food, and environmental monitoring fields.

Enhancement of the Bactericidal Effect of Antibiotics by Inhibition of Enzymes Involved in Production of Hydrogen Sulfide in Bacteria

T. A. Seregina et al.

Summary: This review discusses strategies to counteract multidrug-resistant pathogens responsible for intra-hospital infections. It reveals that some antibiotics, in addition to their traditional targets, induce oxidative stress and enhance bactericidal efficiency. The study shows that hydrogen sulfide produced by certain pathogens not only protects them against oxidative stress but also against bactericidal antibiotics. Inhibiting a bacterial enzyme involved in hydrogen sulfide production can enhance the efficacy of various bactericidal antibiotics and suppress antibiotic tolerance in bacteria.

Iodide-enhanced Co/Fe-MOFs nanozyme for sensitively colorimetric detection of H2S

Xiao-Lan Zhao et al.

Summary: A simple, rapid, and low-cost colorimetric method based on Co/Fe-MOFs-iodide composite was designed for the quantitative detection of H2S. The novel strategy to enhance the peroxidase-like activity of MOFs was demonstrated by utilizing the synergistic effect of Co/Fe-MOFs and iodide, leading to improved peroxidase-like activity. The method showed high sensitivity and accuracy in detecting traces of H2S in serum samples by achieving a detection limit of 0.33 nM.

Inhibitors of bacterial H2S biogenesis targeting antibiotic resistance and tolerance

Konstantin Shatalin et al.

Summary: The emergence of resistance to clinical antibiotics has prompted the development of a new antimicrobial strategy targeting the bacterial hydrogen sulfide (H2S) defense system. Inhibitors of the bacterial cystathionine g-lyase (CSE) have been found to enhance the effectiveness of bactericidal antibiotics against major human pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These inhibitors also disrupt bacterial tolerance, reduce biofilm formation, and decrease the number of persister bacteria surviving antibiotic treatment.
