Strategic cost and sustainability analyses of injection molding and material extrusion additive manufacturing

David Kazmer et al.

Summary: Economic and environmental costs of four different plastics manufacturing processes, including 3D printing, were assessed. It was found that larger 3D printers with upgraded extruders had higher melting capacities and lower specific energy consumption compared to smaller printers. In contrast, cold and hot runner molding processes had lower energy consumption and higher energy efficiencies. Break-even analysis considering cost and carbon footprint showed that injection molding was preferable at a production quantity of around 70,000 units. The analysis also identified mold costs, labor costs, and part size as important factors affecting break-even quantities.

Heavy Metal Contamination of Natural Foods Is a Serious Health Issue: A Review

Naveed Munir et al.

Summary: Heavy metals play a crucial role in maintaining the homeostasis of living cells, but they can also have negative effects on the environment and organisms, impacting crop quality and human health. Studies have shown that vegetables and fruits grown in polluted soil accumulate higher levels of heavy metals, which can reduce the benefits of consuming these foods. Further investigation is needed to understand the mechanisms by which heavy metals affect human health and to establish both the positive and negative effects of heavy metals.

Electrochemical sensors for in-situ measurement of ions in seawater

Maria Cuartero

Summary: The shift from sampling-based to purely in-situ analysis in water monitoring is expected to bring certain benefits, with electrochemical sensors showing potential for ion detection. However, the deployment of electrochemical sensors in submersible devices, particularly in seawater, remains limited.

Environmental footprint of voltammetric sensors based on screen-printed electrodes: An assessment towards green sensor manufacturing

Ashiq Ahamed et al.

Summary: The environmental impact of voltammetric sensors using screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) was evaluated through a life cycle assessment. The study found that a combination of carbon black or waste-derived carbon nanotubes (WCNTs) as electrode materials with ceramic, glass, or paper as substrate materials represents the most environmentally friendly configuration for SPEs.
