A survey of polar stationary phases for hydrophilic interaction chromatography and recent progress in understanding retention and selectivity

Yong Guo

Summary: Various polar stationary phases have been extensively used in HILIC applications in the past decade. This review provides an overview of commercially available polar stationary phases and summarizes the progress made in the past 5 years. New types of stationary phases are discussed, and the trend in stationary phase research and development is highlighted. The review also emphasizes the experimental evidence for direct interactions between polar analytes and stationary phase ligands in HILIC conditions, as well as the advancements in understanding the retention mechanisms.

A validated method for the analysis of sugars and sugar alcohols related to explosives via liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) with post-column addition

Yu-Hsuan Tsai et al.

Summary: In this study, liquid chromatography with mass spectrometric detection was used to analyze eleven sugars and sugar alcohols. A new method for separating the isomeric pair sorbitol/mannitol was developed. The method was validated and showed good stability, low interference, and no significant suppression or enhancement effects from the sample collection matrix. This method also demonstrated its potential in the forensic field.

Non-destructive determination of total sugar content in tobacco filament based on calibration transfer with parameter free adjustment

Yingrui Geng et al.

Summary: The study proposes an efficient non-supervised parameter-free calibration enhancement method for quality assessment in the tobacco industry. It corrects the effects of moisture and material scattering on spectral absorption in the calibration transfer from dried tobacco powder to undried tobacco samples. Compared to other calibration methods, the proposed method achieves the best prediction results. Additionally, competitive adaptive reweighted sampling, variable combination population analysis, and variable combination population analysis genetic algorithm are employed to select important wavelengths and optimize the calibration effect and transfer efficiency.
