Nanomaterials-modified electrochemical sensors for sensitive determination of alkaloids: Recent trends in the application to biological, pharmaceutical and agri-food samples

Judith Ganan et al.

Summary: Alkaloids are widely found secondary metabolites in plants, many of which have significant biological activity and pharmacological applications. However, the potential adverse effects of alkaloids present in food, such as acute hepatotoxicity, genotoxicity, and neurological damage, raise concerns among consumers. Therefore, developing sensitive, selective, and convenient sensors for alkaloids screening is crucial. Electrochemical detection platforms, particularly those based on nanomaterials, have shown great potential as a cost-effective, efficient, eco-friendly, and easy-to-operate analytical approach for alkaloids detection in various applications.

A novel atropine electrochemical sensor based on silver nano particle-coated Spirulina platensis multicellular blue-green microalga

Fuad Ameen et al.

Summary: In this study, an environmentally friendly sensor was used to measure the anticholinergic drug Atropine. Self-cultivated Spirulina platensis with electroless silver and 1-Hexyl-3 methylimidazolium Hexafluorophosphate (HMIM PF6) ion liquid were employed as materials for electrode modification. Voltammetry methods were used to determine Atropine, and pH 10.0 was found to be the optimal condition. The fabricated sensor showed linear responses in the concentration range from 0.01 to 800 μM, with a lowest detection limit of 5 nM. The stability, reproducibility, and selectivity of the sensor were confirmed, and it was successfully applied to the determination of Atropine in real samples.

Highly Sensitive Determination of Atropine in Pharmaceuticals, Biological Fluids and Beverage on Planar Electrochemical Cell with Working Boron-Doped Diamond Electrode

Olha Dushna et al.

Summary: In this paper, a planar electrochemical cell with a novel screen-printed sensor and a boron-doped diamond electrode was used for the first time to determine the alkaloid atropine. By changing the diameter of the electrode, the linear concentration range was improved. Calibration curves were obtained using differential pulse voltammetry and square-wave voltammetry. The method can also be used for determination in drugs and biological fluids, and has the advantages of being rapid, inexpensive, and portable.

Summary: In this work, ephedrine was studied at the electrified liquid-liquid interface using a micro-punched array of apertures in a self-adhesive polyimide tape. By controlling the penetration depth and utilizing ion transfer voltammetry, ephedrine sensing was achieved with a detection limit of 1 μM. The best results were obtained with a membrane containing 12 micro-punched pores made with the highest studied penetration depth of 1450 μm.
