Summary: This review focuses on macrophage responses to Mtb infection, particularly the mechanistic aspects of autophagy and how intracellular Mtb evades autophagy. The relationship between autophagy and apoptosis is also discussed, along with known autophagy inducing compounds for Mtb infection. The use of nanoparticles to induce autophagy is explored as a potential avenue for further research into nanomedicine HDTs for TB therapy.

A nanocompartment system contributes to defense against oxidative stress in Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Katie A. Lien et al.

Summary: Encapsulin nanocompartments, containing dye-decolorizing peroxidase DyP, produced by the human pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis are crucial for resisting oxidative stress in low pH environments, especially during infection of host cells and antibiotic treatment. These findings are the first to implicate a nanocompartment in bacterial pathogenesis, revealing a new mechanism for Mtb to combat oxidative stress.

Repurposing Immunomodulatory Drugs to Combat Tuberculosis

Samreen Fatima et al.

Summary: Tuberculosis is a deadly infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Current treatment involves a combination of antibiotics for 6 months, but limitations such as toxicity and long duration make adherence challenging, leading to drug resistance. The development of new TB drugs is crucial to combat drug resistance and shorten treatment duration, but the process is time-consuming and costly. Repurposing existing drugs for other diseases shows promise in targeting multiple pathways to reduce the risk of drug resistance and has potential as adjunct therapies against TB.
