Sepsis and disseminated intravascular coagulation are rare complications of typhoid fever: A case report

Nurnaningsih et al.

Summary: Typhoid fever is an infection caused by Salmonella typhi, which can lead to complications such as intestinal perforation and typhoid encephalopathy. However, cases of typhoid fever with sepsis and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) are rarely reported. This case report describes a 4-year-old boy who presented with fever, decreased consciousness, and massive bleeding, and was diagnosed with typhoid fever with DIC and sepsis as complications. DIC is not commonly found in typhoid fever, and further research is needed to explore the association between typhoid fever and DIC.

Risk of non-typhoidal Salmonella vascular infections is increased with degree of atherosclerosis and inflammation: A multicenter study in southern Taiwan

Ying-Wen Chen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the risk of vascular infection in patients with NTS bacteremia by measuring atherosclerosis severity, NTSVI score, and serum levels of inflammatory markers. The results showed that atherosclerosis of the aorta and higher NTSVI score were associated with the occurrence of vascular infections, and serum IL-10 concentration could serve as a biomarker for vascular infection in patients with NTS bacteremia.

Direct association between rainfall and non-typhoidal Salmonella bloodstream infections in hospital-admitted children in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Bieke Tack et al.

Summary: Non-typhoidal Salmonella is a major cause of bloodstream infection in children under five in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with main risk factors including Plasmodium falciparum malaria, anemia, and malnutrition. A study on NTS bloodstream infections in children admitted to Kisantu referral hospital from 2013-2019 found a direct association between rainfall and NTS variation, independent of host-associated factors, highlighting the need for further research on environmental NTS transmission.

Salmonella Bloodstream Infections in Hospitalized Children with Acute Febrile Illness-Uganda, 2016-2019

Grace D. Appiah et al.

Summary: Invasive Salmonella infection is a common cause of acute febrile illness among children in subSaharan Africa, with Salmonella bacteremia being challenging to diagnose without blood culture. A study in Uganda analyzed data from hospitalized children and found that those with bloodstream infections had longer hospital stays and higher fatality rates compared to those without infections. Salmonella, particularly drug-resistant Typhi, were identified as the most common pathogens causing bloodstream infections in this setting.

Salmonella Typhimurium Triggers Extracellular Traps Release in Murine Macrophages

Amy Monaco et al.

Summary: Salmonella, a pathogen responsible for a wide range of diseases, triggers host inflammatory responses and recruits innate immune cells. Research has shown that macrophages can release extracellular DNA traps, known as Macrophage Extracellular Traps (METs), which play a crucial role in immobilizing and reducing Salmonella survival, offering a novel immune-mediated defense mechanism against Salmonella infection.
