The two-component system histidine kinase EnvZ contributes to Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli pathogenicity by regulating biofilm formation and stress responses

Dandan Fu et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers found that deletion of the envZ gene in APEC significantly reduced biofilm formation, resistance to stress conditions, and pathogenicity. They also found that EnvZ influenced the adhesion ability of APEC to chicken embryonic fibroblast cells and the expression of inflammatory cytokines. Transcriptome analysis revealed the involvement of outer membrane proteins, stress response systems, and TCSs in the regulatory role of EnvZ. This study provides compelling evidence for the contribution of EnvZ to APEC pathogenicity.

Linhui Li et al.

Summary: This article reports a case of severe skin and soft tissue infection caused by Aeromonas veronii. The patient was a 50-year-old Chinese woman with a history of cardiac disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus, who accidentally injured her left thumb. Early antibiotic therapy and surgical debridement were performed, and whole-genome sequencing confirmed the pathogen and revealed drug resistance and virulence genes. After 1 month of treatment, the wound gradually healed, and after 3 months of rehabilitation, the left hand recovered well in appearance and function.

Two-Component System Response Regulator ompR Regulates Mussel Settlement through Exopolysaccharides

Wei Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, the function of the two-component system response regulator ompR on biofilm formation and mussel settlement was investigated. The deletion of the ompR gene in Pseudoalteromonas marina resulted in increased motility, decreased biofilm-forming capacity, and reduced induction of plantigrade settlement in mussels. The levels of extracellular polysaccharides were also decreased in the delta ompR strain. Addition of recombinant OmpW protein restored biofilm-inducing activities and upregulated exopolysaccharides. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the regulatory mechanism of bacterial two-component systems and benthic animal settlement.

Living together: The role of Candida albicans in the formation of polymicrobial biofilms in the oral cavity

Maria Rapala-Kozik et al.

Summary: The oral cavity of humans is colonized by a variety of microbial community, including bacteria and fungi such as Candida albicans. Under certain conditions, C. albicans can transform into an invasive pathogen that causes mucosal infections. This transformation is associated with changes in cell morphology and the expression of virulence factors. C. albicans can also interact with different bacterial species, producing biofilms that enhance colonization and resistance to antimicrobial agents. However, these microbial relationships are influenced by the complexity of host conditions and microbial dominance in vivo.

Understanding bacterial biofilms: From definition to treatment strategies

Ailing Zhao et al.

Summary: Bacterial biofilms are complex microbial communities surrounded by extracellular polymeric substances. They are a significant problem in treating bacterial infections and can exhibit increased resistance to antibiotics, causing device-related and non-device infections and posing a serious threat to global health. Therefore, early detection and search for new treatments are essential. This paper systematically reviews the formation, infections, detection methods, and potential treatment strategies of bacterial biofilms, aiming to provide researchers with the latest progress in their detection and treatment.

Occurrence of potential virulence determinants in Aeromonas spp. isolated from different aquatic environments

Sana Majeed et al.

Summary: Aeromonas species are bacterial pathogens that cause economic losses in aquaculture and pose a threat to public health. They are widely distributed and can cause diseases in both humans and aquatic animals. The presence of virulent Aeromonas spp. in aquatic environments predisposes infections. Researchers have found various virulence factors and toxin genes of Aeromonas spp. in aquatic environments, which enhance their pathogenic ability. The high prevalence of Aeromonas spp. in the aquatic environment is of concern due to the potential for transmission to humans through contaminated food and water. This review highlights the risks associated with Aeromonas species' virulence properties for both aquaculture and public health.

The Regulatory Circuit Underlying Downregulation of a Type III Secretion System in Yersinia enterocolitica by Transcription Factor OmpR

Marta Nieckarz et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of the transcriptional regulator OmpR in membrane protein expression and secretion in Yersinia enterocolitica. The findings show that OmpR negatively affects the levels of Ysc-Yop proteins, particularly YopD, and represses the expression of yopD. OmpR also has a positive role in the expression of the master regulator of the flagellar-associated T3SS, flhDC.

The role and mechanisms of the two-component system EnvZ/OmpR on the intracellular survival of Aeromonas hydrophila

Ziyan Du et al.

Summary: Aeromonas hydrophila infections are common in aquaculture. The two-component system EnvZ/OmpR plays an important role in the intracellular survival of A. hydrophila. Silencing the genes of envZ/ompR significantly decreases the survival rates and escape ability of the bacteria. The two-component system EnvZ/OmpR regulates the expression of molecular chaperones and maintains ion homeostasis to affect the bacterial survival in macrophages.

Identification of Essential Genes Associated With Prodigiosin Production in Serratia marcescens FZSF02

Xianbo Jia et al.

Summary: Prodigiosin, a promising secondary metabolite produced mainly by Serratia strains, was studied through mutagenesis library construction with EZ-Tn5 transposon, revealing 33 genes involved in prodigiosin production can be classified into transcription-regulating, membrane protein-encoding, and metabolism enzyme-encoding genes. The downregulation of pigA gene transcription in mutants with different inserted genes corresponded to decreased prodigiosin production, while functional confirmation of mutant genes in the pyrimidine nucleotide biosynthesis pathway was conducted by adding orotate and uridylate to the medium. Gene complementation confirmed the regulatory role of EnvZ/OmpR two-component regulatory system genes envZ and ompR in prodigiosin production.
