Ethanol as a renewable biofuel: Combustion characteristics and application in engines

Summary: This review article focuses on the study of ethanol combustion and utilization from various aspects. It discusses the production and sustainability of corn-based and sugarcane-based ethanol as renewable and sustainable biofuel. The understanding of ethanol combustion is presented through the application of thermodynamic theory and detailed chemical kinetic mechanisms. Safety parameters related to ethanol combustion are also discussed, including flammability and detonability limits. The review also addresses the use of ethanol blended with gasoline in spark ignition engines, diesel-ethanol blends in compression ignition engines, and the potential use of biodiesel in diesel-ethanol-biodiesel blends. The impact of ethanol fuel blends on greenhouse gas emissions in internal combustion engines is reviewed, and the possibility of integrating internal combustion engines with ethanol fuel cells is also considered.
