The role of the solidification structure on orientation-dependent hardness in stainless steel 316L produced by laser powder bed fusion

Sravya Tekumalla et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigates the mechanical anisotropy of SS316L produced by laser powder bed fusion. The results suggest that both grain orientation and solidification structure play important roles in the mechanical properties of the alloy, with cell spacing along the slip direction identified as a key factor affecting hardness anisotropy.

New insights on cellular structures strengthening mechanisms and thermal stability of an austenitic stainless steel fabricated by laser powder-bed-fusion

Thomas Voisin et al.

Summary: The rapid solidification cellular structures in 316L austenitic stainless steels fabricated by laser powder-bed-fusion were found to have specific crystallographic orientations in cell walls, which act as barriers to dislocation movement and contribute to material strengthening. Additionally, oxide precipitates confined inside cell walls also enhance the material's strength. Overall, the understanding of these intrinsic characteristics and strengthening mechanisms can help improve the material's thermal stability and high strength.

Revealing relationships between microstructure and hardening nature of additively manufactured 316L stainless steel

Luqing Cui et al.

Summary: The relationship between microstructures and hardening nature of laser powder bed fused (L-PBF) 316 L stainless steel has been studied, showing that the hardness of the alloy is predominantly governed by GNDs. During annealing treatments, the migration of GNDs and the decrease of SSD density play important roles in the hardness variation of the material.

Exploring the origins of the indentation size effect at submicron scales

Xiaolong Ma et al.

Summary: Through the use of precession electron beam diffraction microscopy, researchers were able to examine the dislocation characteristics of a single crystal of nickel beneath the surface, revealing the impact of indentation depth on dislocation behavior. The indentation size effect deviates from the Nix-Gao model and is largely controlled by dislocation source starvation, leading to high dislocation mobility and the formation of subgrain boundaries.
