Approaches Used to Describe, Measure, and Analyze Place of Practice in Dentistry, Medical, Nursing, and Allied Health Rural Graduate Workforce Research in Australia: A Systematic Scoping Review

Hannah Beks et al.

Summary: Addressing the unequal distribution of healthcare workers in remote areas is a global issue, crucial for improving access to primary healthcare and specialist services. However, geographical classification systems are not consistently used in rural health research. This review examines Australian rural studies on dentistry, medicine, nursing, and allied health graduates, focusing on their place of practice. The study finds variations and challenges in defining rurality, recommending the use of uniform definitions aligned with current government policy in future research.

Factors influencing medical radiation science graduates' early career principal place of practice: a retrospective cohort study

Lauren Farrugia et al.

Summary: The study found that factors such as location of origin and MRS discipline significantly influenced the choice of rural or non-rural principal practice location for medical radiation science graduates. Graduates from rural areas and those in diagnostic radiography were more likely to choose a rural PPP. Further investigation into the impact of rural undergraduate MRS placements is recommended to help reduce the gap between rural and metropolitan medical radiation service availability.

National analysis of the Modified Monash Model, population distribution and a socio-economic index to inform rural health workforce planning

Vincent L. Versace et al.

Summary: This study aims to describe the population distribution and socio-economic position of residents in Australia using the Modified Monash Model classifications. Through spatial analysis of ABS data, it was found that many residents in small rural towns face disadvantage, and the Modified Monash Model highlights areas with differing levels of socio-economic advantage and disadvantage. The advantage of using this model as the basis for analysis is that it helps target funding to regions with potential to improve access to services for rural residents.
