Nature-inspired energy dissipation sandwich composites reinforced with high-friction graphene

Jigang Feng et al.

Summary: This study designs and prepares nature-inspired sandwich composites for vibration suppression, which exhibit improved damping properties and surface friction force compared to conventional blended composites. Dynamic mechanical analysis and vibration test results confirm the superior damping properties of sandwich composites. Polydopamine modification of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) enhances the damping capability, providing an effective strategy for vibration energy dissipation and damping enhancement.

Nonlinear vibration model of sandwich beam with a shear thickening fluid core

Weijun Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic performance of a sandwich beam with a shear thickening fluid (STF) core under periodic excitation. The addition of STF allows the beam to have adjustable stiffness and damping capacity during dynamic deformation. The research findings reveal that the resonant frequency of the beam increases with the amplitude of the external excitation in a power law relationship. Furthermore, the initial damping ratio of the STF with shear thinning zone decreases initially and then increases with the increase of the initial excitation amplitude.

Amplitude-dependent damping characteristics of all-composite sandwich plates with a foam-filled hexagon honeycomb core

Hui Li et al.

Summary: The amplitude-dependent damping characteristics of all-composite sandwich (ACS) plates with a hexagon honeycomb core (HHC) filled by soft foam (SF) are investigated. The solutions of nonlinear fundamental frequencies, mode shapes, and damping ratios of HHC-SF-ACS plates are obtained theoretically. It is found that increasing the Young's or shear moduli of foam material and the filling ratio of SF can improve the damping property of the composite plates significantly.

Nonlinear vibrations of a beam with non-ideal boundary conditions and subjected to two correlated or uncorrelated broadband random excitations-experiments, modeling and simulations

S. Talik et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of two broadband correlated or uncorrelated random excitations on a beam with non-ideal boundary conditions. The experimental and numerical results show that different configurations of random excitations significantly influence the vibration phenomena of the beam, and good agreement is observed between experiments and simulations.

Nonlinear random vibrations of micro-beams with fractional viscoelastic core

Ehsan Loghman et al.

Summary: This work investigates the nonlinear vibration of a fractional viscoelastic micro-beam exposed to random excitation. A micro-beam model based on the Modified Couple Stress Theory (MCST) is established, and the fractional nonlinear partial differential equation is obtained using Von-Karman's nonlinear strains and the Kelvin-Voigt fractional viscoelastic model. The micro-beam is subjected to a random force considered as Gaussian white noise. The stochastic governing equation of motion is discretized using the Finite Difference Method (FDM) and the Galerkin method, with a numerical discretization applied for the white noise excitation. The Statistical Linearization (SL) method and the Spectral Representation (SR) method are employed and compared. The simulations show good agreement between the numerical method and other methods, and the proposed method can be used for different boundary conditions of the micro-beam. The impact of factors such as fractional derivative order, white noise intensity, viscoelastic model, and length-scale parameter on the statistical properties of the micro-beam is also examined.

Summary: The shape memory effect is crucial in the design of self-reconfigurable cores using origami techniques. This study presents the effects of heat treatment on the transformation temperatures and stress-strain curves of shape memory alloys (SMA) using differential scanning calorimetry and tensile testing. Additionally, the vibration behavior of pre/post-buckled sandwich beams with self-deployable SMA cores and hybrid composite faces reinforced with SMA wires is investigated.
