Analysis on the nonlinear lateral vibration of drillstring in curved wells with beam finite element

Mingjie Cai et al.

Summary: This study models the nonlinear lateral vibration of drillstring in curved wells at an actual drilling engineering scale, using beam finite element method and verifying the model through field data reproduction. The study introduces the concept of efficient length for lateral vibration in curved wells and discusses the influences of rotation speed, weight on bit, coefficient of friction, and stabilizer on drillstring lateral vibration.

Experimental investigation on the PDC cutter penetration efficiency in high-temperature granite

Xianwei Dai et al.

Summary: The study found that the penetration efficiency of PDC cutters is affected by temperature and back rake angle at high temperatures, with little change in rock properties from 25 to 240 degrees Celsius. Rock failure characteristics such as chipping and crushing were observed during the indentation process, with chipping being the major contributor to increased penetration efficiency.

Torsion and vibration reduction mechanism of roller PDC hybrid bit

Kuilin Huang et al.

Summary: The research shows that the equivalent friction coefficient of different contour Rollers is lower than that of PDC cutters, and the torsion reduction ability of the Rollers is higher than that of PDC cutters. The vibration reduction in the roller teeth in different radial positions was 1.59-9.17 times higher than that of PDC cutters. The torque of the roller PDC hybrid bit is 71.72%-98.33% of the conventional PDC bit. The roller shares 1.59%-23.06% of the WOB of the whole bit. As the cutter teeth and the PDC cutter's relative height decreases, the compound drilling torque decreases, the roller bit's weight proportion gradually increases, the torsional capacity decreases, and the damping capacity increases.

On the stochastic bit-rock interaction disturbances and its effects on the performance of two commercial control strategies used in drill strings

D. M. Lobo et al.

Summary: Drill string vibration is a well-known source of undesirable disturbance in drilling operations, making it crucial to design and evaluate active controllers to suppress it. This paper analyzes two commercial control strategies applied to a drill string model, considering uncertainties, and finds that as uncertainties increase, the effectiveness of the control strategies in suppressing vibrations decreases.

Research on cutting track and working load of directional drilling PDC bit

Haiping Tian et al.

Summary: Polycrystalline diamond compact bit directional drilling technology has been proven to significantly improve drilling efficiency and reduce costs. The directional drilling PDC bit undergoes complex cutting motions due to the screw angle or offset mechanism, leading to the deviation of the bit's center axis from the borehole center. The research on the kinematics analysis, calculation model, and cutting mechanics model of PDC cutters under directional drilling conditions has provided insights into rock breaking mechanisms and potential for increased mechanical efficiency.

Nonlinear vibration model and response characteristic of drilling risers in deep-sea under soft suspension evacuation condition

Jun Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a three-dimensional nonlinear vibration model is established to investigate the characteristics of soft suspension riser. The model considers multiple nonlinear factors and accurately describes the vibration of the actual riser. The research finds that the reasonable allocation of buoyancy blocks and controlling the evacuation speed are important for suppressing riser vibration.

Huaigang Hu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new method to improve rock-breaking efficiency at the bottom of ultra-deep wells by using a supporting Weight-on-bit Self-adjusting Dual-diameter PDC Bit, which combines stress releasing tools and cutting methods. Through numerical calculations and comparative testing, optimized structural parameters have been obtained to maximize the damage to the rock at the bottom of the well.

Sensing and computational frameworks for improving drill-string dynamics estimation

Jean Auriol et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the axial motion of directional multi-sectional drill-strings and proposes a sensing and computational framework to estimate drill-string dynamics and rocks' intrinsic energy during drilling, aiming to address vibrations and safety issues caused by drill-bit rock interactions. By combining drill-string dynamics modeling with top drive hook-load and hook-speed measurements, the force on-bit can be estimated without knowledge of the sub-surface. Modeling seismic radiation patterns of drill-bit rock interactions near the surface enables appropriate estimation of rocks' intrinsic energy during drilling.

Theoretical and simulation analysis on rock breaking mechanical properties of arc-shaped PDC bit

Pei Ju et al.

Summary: By establishing theoretical calculation models of cutting parameters of PDC cutters, the rock breaking mechanical characteristics of arc-shaped PDC bits were studied, revealing the concentration of maximum cutting force on certain cutters prone to damage. A new bit structure was designed to achieve uniform distribution of cutting force, with numerical simulation and field test results confirming the reliability of the theoretical calculations.
