Multi-level micromechanics-based homogenization for the prediction of damage behavior of multiscale fiber-reinforced composites

Taegeon Kil et al.

Summary: A multi-level micromechanics-based homogenization is proposed to investigate the damage behavior of composites with multiscale fibers. Molecular unit cell is constructed to consider the interfacial characteristics between the fibers and a polymer matrix, and molecular dynamics simulation and micromechanics are used to obtain the elastic properties of the composites. A progressive damage model is adopted to predict the damage behavior, and the results are compared with experimental data, showing a close match.

A novel experimental method and computational micromechanical model for in-situ damage detection and prediction of stiffness degradation in cross-ply FML

Rahmatollah Ghajar et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel experimental method for in-situ damage detection in symmetrical and balanced glass/epoxy laminates composed of unidirectional layers. A 3D finite-element micromechanical model is used to predict stiffness degradation in a cross-ply fiber-metal laminate caused by transverse cracks and metal damage. The model is developed in Abaqus with two user-defined subroutines, UMAT and UHARD, coded in FORTRAN and linked to the model. Periodic boundary conditions are applied to the model using a Python script. The predictions are validated against conventional loading-unloading experimental tests, and excellent agreement is observed between the proposed model and the experiment.

Development of a unified constitutive model coupled with a continuum damage model for design and evaluation of high-temperature components

Nazrul Islam et al.

Summary: A unified constitutive model coupled with a continuum damage model is developed for the design and evaluation of high-temperature components. The study proposes a modified isotropic damage model and experimentally validates the model's applicability for various high-temperature responses. The proposed unified constitutive model shows promise in predicting fatigue and creep responses.

Fatigue-life prediction of additively manufactured metals by continuous damage mechanics (CDM)-informed machine learning with sensitive features

Haijie Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a machine learning framework based on sensitive features and continuous damage mechanics to predict the fatigue life of additive manufacturing (AM)-built parts. By extracting sensitive features and considering AM parameters in the continuous damage mechanics theory, a physics-informed machine learning model can be constructed for prediction.
