A numerical model for predicting waves run-up on coastal areas

Hasan Karjoun et al.

Summary: Numerical investigations were conducted to validate a numerical model for predicting waves propagation and run-up on coastal zones. The model is based on the two-dimensional dispersive shallow water equations, taking into account the effects of variable bottom topography and bed friction. A Godunov-type finite volume method was used to solve the resulting nonlinear system on unstructured triangular grids, with a semi-implicit scheme for friction terms and a well-balanced formulation for bottom topography. The numerical simulations showed good agreement with laboratory experiments, confirming the robustness and accuracy of the proposed model in predicting waves propagation on coastal areas.

A structure-preserving algorithm for surface water flows with transport processes

Hasan Karjoun et al.

Summary: This study focuses on a coupled system of equations modeling shallow water flow with solute transport. An artificial dissipation is introduced to improve the dissipation properties of the numerical scheme. The proposed formulation guarantees consistency between the continuity equation and transport equation at the discrete level, as well as maintaining nonlinear stability and positivity of the scheme. The positivity of the concentration is proven with the combination of a suitable discretization of the diffusion term and the proposed reconstruction procedure and artificial dissipation formulation.

Numerical scheme for solving a porous Saint-Venant type model for water flow on vegetated hillslopes

Stelian Ion et al.

Summary: The study focuses on water flow over a soil surface with vegetation in a hydrographic basin, utilizing a partial-differential-equation model based on fluid mechanics principles. The effect of vegetation on water dynamics is explained in terms of porosity, and the model properties are discussed and investigated with quantitative and qualitative validation tests.

Wave-like motion and secondary currents in arrays of emergent cylinders induced by large scale eddying motion

Catia Taborda et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the characterization of free-surface flows with riparian corridors, particularly the wave-like motion and its influence on secondary currents. By sampling the fluid motion and analyzing the structure of phase-averaged coherent structure, it is revealed that there is a strong variation of Reynolds stress anisotropy and oscillatory motion in the spanwise direction. The analysis of mass fluxes associated with each large eddy shows the presence of a complex 3D pattern and a net mass imbalance, generating a secondary current directed outwards.

A new second-order modified hydrostatic reconstruction for the shallow water flows with a discontinuous topography

Jian Dong et al.

Summary: A new modified second-order hydrostatic reconstruction method is proposed in this study, which can achieve better numerical results for shallow water flows with discontinuous bottom topography. The method ensures well-balancing property and positivity preserving property through modifying the reconstruction at the wet dry front and using a draining time-step technique.

Predicting the bulk drag coefficient of flexible vegetation in wave flows based on a genetic programming algorithm

Yanxu Wang et al.

Summary: This study redefines Re and KC numbers by considering vegetation and hydrodynamic characteristics, and develops a new C-D predictor using a genetic programming algorithm based on extensive experimental data. The new predictor depends on the new KC number, submergence ratio, and Ursell number, demonstrating considerable improvement in predictive ability compared to existing predictors.

Overland Flow Resistance Law under Sparse Stem Vegetation Coverage

Jingzhou Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the resistance characteristics of overland flow under varying slope gradients, flow discharges, and degrees of vegetation coverage. It found that the Manning roughness coefficient changed with water depth to vegetation height ratio, and that vegetation coverage, Reynolds number, Froude number, and slope were closely related to resistance. Different hydraulic parameters showed specific relationships with the Manning roughness coefficient, indicating the importance of studying overland flow resistance under different conditions of sparse vegetation coverage.
