Incorporation of geological constraints and semivariogram scaling law into geostatistical modeling of metal contents in hydrothermal deposits for improved accuracy

Katsuaki Koike et al.

Summary: Two geostatistical methods incorporating geological information and semivariogram scaling law were developed to improve spatial estimation accuracy of metal contents at fine scale and successfully applied to two types of hydrothermal deposits. The methods showed significant advantages in increasing accuracy in high-content zones and detailing metal distribution in the deposits.

Summary: This paper introduces a new concept of using convolutional neural networks to map hydraulic transmissivity. The relationship between concentration data and transmissivity field is established through two networks, which are trained and reconstructed to obtain accurate transmissivity fields.

Evaluating the effectiveness of a geostatistical approach with groundwater flow modeling for three-dimensional estimation of a contaminant plume

Shizuka Takai et al.

Summary: This study improved the geostatistical method for estimating the contaminant plume distribution by incorporating the non-negativity constraint using Gibbs sampling and groundwater flow modeling. The effectiveness of this method was tested on groundwater contamination in a landfill in Canada, and it was found to provide accurate estimations for the plume distributions of three organic contaminants.

Large-scale three-dimensional hydraulic tomography analyses of long-term municipal wellfield operations

Ning Luo et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method of utilizing existing municipal well records as alternative datasets for large-scale subsurface heterogeneity characterization. By adopting geology-based zonation and geostatistical models, the study achieves more accurate modeling results and reveals greater details of intralayer heterogeneity. The results show that municipal well records can be effectively used for large-scale heterogeneity characterization when uncertainties regarding initial and boundary conditions are well addressed for inverse modeling.

A Combination of Geostatistical Methods and Principal Components Analysis for Detection of Mineralized Zones in Seafloor Hydrothermal Systems

Vitor Ribeiro deSa et al.

Summary: The study aims to identify and characterize mineralized zones in seafloor hydrothermal areas using limited metal content data, employing principal component analysis and three geostatistical methods. Results from a case study in the Okinawa Trough show two types of high metal content zones, contributing to a better understanding of SMS deposit formation mechanism and guiding submarine metal reserves and mining.

A comparison between ES-MDA and restart EnKF for the purpose of the simultaneous identification of a contaminant source and hydraulic conductivity

Teng Xu et al.

Summary: Understanding a contaminant source is crucial for managing a polluted aquifer, but source information may be unavailable when pollutants are detected. The Ensemble Smoother with Multiple Data Assimilation (ES-MDA) is proposed as a more efficient solution than the restart Ensemble Kalman Filter (r-EnKF), but requires a large number of assimilations to achieve the same level of accuracy.

Contaminant Spill in a Sandbox with Non-Gaussian Conductivities: Simultaneous Identification by the Restart Normal-Score Ensemble Kalman Filter

Zi Chen et al.

Summary: This study applied the restart normal-score ensemble Kalman filter (rNS-EnKF) technique to a non-synthetic case under laboratory conditions, demonstrating the effectiveness of Bauser's covariance inflation method in preventing filter collapse and achieving good results. The method significantly reduced the number of ensemble realizations needed for joint identification of contaminant sources and spatial heterogeneity of conductivities.

Individual and joint inversion of head and flux data by geostatistical hydraulic tomography

Behzad Pouladi et al.

Summary: Hydraulic tomography is an advanced method for inferring hydraulic conductivity fields using head data, with flux data providing better resolution in similar signal-to-noise ratios. The quality of estimated fields is similar when considering a high number of observation points, and joint inversion does not offer advantages over individual inversions with the same number of observations. Joint inversion performs better than individual inversions when considering twice as many observation points.
