Lifetime Enhancement and Degradation Study of Blue OLEDs Using Deuterated Materials

Jingwen Yao et al.

Summary: Significant lifetime enhancement, up to an eight-fold increase in T90, has been demonstrated in blue organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices through the deuteration of host and hole transport materials. The deuteration effects were elucidated using laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight (LDI-TOF) mass spectrometry, which revealed the formation of adduct species that act as electroluminescence quenchers. The kinetic isotope effect of the photodegradation reactions showed an approximate agreement with the enhancement in device lifetime with deuteration.

Probing polaron-induced exciton quenching in TADF based organic light-emitting diodes

Monirul Hasan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of polaron-induced quenching on the efficiency roll-off in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and quantifies the contributions of singlet-polaron annihilation (SPA) and triplet-polaron annihilation (TPA). The results show that charge imbalance and singlet-triplet annihilation (STA) are the main contributing factors, while device degradation is mainly influenced by TPA. It is demonstrated that improving the charge recombination rate can reduce the effect of polaron-induced quenching and decrease the efficiency roll-off.

A novel electroplex host with dual triplet exciton up-converting channels suppressing triplet exciton induced degradation mechanisms in blue organic light-emitting diodes

Ju Hui Yun et al.

Summary: A novel electroplex host with two triplet exciton up-converting channels was developed to suppress triplet exciton triggered degradation mechanisms, improving the device lifetime of deep blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs). The host, with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) characteristics, generated an electroplex with a hole transport type host, resulting in an extended device lifetime compared to non-TADF natured hosts. Two reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) mechanisms through the TADF host and electroplex host were identified to suppress triplet exciton related degradation and enhance device lifetime, supported by kinetic modeling of the electroplex.

Summary: By enhancing the oxidation stability of the host material, the device lifetime of phosphorescent OLEDs was improved in this study. Phenyl protection of the active site increased the oxidation stability and positive polaron stability of the host, leading to an extended device lifetime compared to conventional hole-transport-type hosts. Specifically, the 2-TPhDCz host doubled the device lifetime of the phosphorescent OLEDs.

High efficiency and long lifetime orange-red thermally activated delayed fluorescent organic light emitting diodes by donor and acceptor engineering

Shantaram Kothavale et al.

Summary: Highly efficient and stable TADF emitters are needed for commercial applications, but achieving high EQE and long lifetime in a single organic molecular design is difficult, especially in long wavelength designs. Two orange-red TADF emitters, 6,7-DCNQx-DICz and 5,8-DCNQx-DICz, were designed and synthesized, with 6,7-DCNQx-DICz achieving a higher EQE of 23.9% and a lifetime of 931 hours, while 5,8-DCNQx-DICz had a lower EQE of 12.5%, but a longer lifetime of 1184 hours. The combination of DICz and DCQx units could be a promising chemical platform for future highly efficient and long lifetime orange-red TADF OLED designs.
