Improvement of oxide chemical mechanical polishing performance by increasing Ce3+/Ce4+ratio in ceria slurry via hydrogen reduction

Jaewon Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, the surface of ceria was reduced by contact with hydrogen gas in a high temperature isothermal environment, resulting in the formation of surface hydroxyls. These hydroxyls then desorbed to form H2O and oxygen vacancies. The reduction reaction caused a change in the crystal structure, leading to a color change in ceria from yellow to blue. The reducing ability of hydrogen gas increased by 12.7% under isothermal conditions at 1000 degrees C, and the material removal rate (MRR) of reduced ceria improved by up to 37.7% compared to the original ceria.

Atomic removal mechanism of nano polishing for single-crystal AlN substrate via molecular dynamics

Yan He et al.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate the atomic removal mechanism of diamond abrasive on single-crystal AlN substrate under different movement modes. The study found that stronger mechanical action resulted in more atomic detachment, stacking, and amorphization. Higher sliding velocity reduced the interaction time between the substrate and abrasive, leading to fewer removed atoms and less amorphous structure. Rolling and vibrating movements contributed to more atomic detachment and stacking, while the combination of rolling and vibrating reduced the number of removed atoms and damage.

Chemical mechanical polishing exploiting metal electrochemical corrosion of single-crystal SiC

Yingrong Luo et al.

Summary: This study proposes a chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) method for single-crystal SiC based on metal electrochemical corrosion. The oxidation mechanism of SiC by electrochemical corrosion of metals and the mechanism of surface material removal are revealed through experiments. The use of metal polishing discs and electrolyte solutions significantly improves the polishing efficiency and surface quality of SiC.

Cooperative Reaction of Hydrogen-Networked Water Molecules at the SiC-H2O2 Solution Interface: Microscopic Insights from Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics

Tetsuya Morishita et al.

Summary: Research has found that water molecules on the surfaces of silicon carbide (SiC) are highly reactive when in contact with a hydrogen peroxide solution, and the reactions are accelerated by cooperative hydrogen transfer. The reaction of hydrogen peroxide molecules on the Si-terminated and C-terminated faces of SiC surfaces is found to be different, which may explain the different oxidation rates of these surfaces. These findings provide new insights into the initial stage of SiC oxidation during chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) with aqueous oxidant solutions.

Superimpose mechanism of surface generation process in grinding of monocrystalline silicon using molecular dynamics simulation

Pengyue Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the superimpose mechanism of surface generation in the grinding process through molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the superposition process redistributes the machined surface and subsurface damage layer, reducing the processing temperature and tangential and lateral force components.

Probing the local creep mechanisms of SiC/SiC ceramic matrix composites with high-temperature nanoindentation

Clifton H. Bumgardner et al.

Summary: The local creep response of SiC/SiC ceramic matrix composites was examined via high-temperature indentation to study the contributions of heterogeneous microstructure to creep. Different materials showed varying creep strain rates under indentation tests, with a developed analytical creep model based on a rule of mixtures approach to incorporate material heterogeneity of the SiC/SiC composite. The finite element model predicted the indentation deformation zone influenced by the composite constituents and showed good agreement with experimental measurements up to 800 degrees C.

Effect of inclusion on 4H-SiC during nano-scratching from an atomistic perspective

Yuhua Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of inclusions on scratching behavior during SiC epitaxy was explored through molecular dynamics modeling. It was found that inclusions significantly affect the microstructure, atomistic behavior, and machinability. Eliminating inclusions requires a high penetration depth, but increases the sensitivity of process parameters.

Removal behavior of micropipe in 4H-SiC during micromachining

Yuhua Huang et al.

Summary: Silicon carbide is a good semiconductor material due to its performance in high-voltage and high-frequency fields, but defects like micropipe can impact device performance. Research shows that adjusting penetration depth during micromachining may not completely eliminate the effect of micropipe, but different dynamic behaviors of 4H-SiC under various penetration depths could be a strategy for detecting or controlling the impact of micropipe.

Summary: In this research, a neuroevolution-potential framework for generating neural network-based machine-learning potentials trained with an evolutionary strategy is developed. The atomic environment descriptor is constructed using Chebyshev and Legendre polynomials. The NEP method, implemented in GPUMD package, achieves high computational speed and provides per-atom heat current information.
