Using Plane Strain Compression Test to Evaluate the Mechanical Behavior of Magnesium Processed by HPT

Amanda P. Carvalho et al.

Summary: There is a high interest in improving mechanical testing of small laboratory samples. Plane strain compression, a test method for thin sheets, shows great potential for samples produced by high-pressure torsion. In this study, a custom tool was designed to test 10 mm diameter discs processed by this technique. Finite element analysis was used to evaluate deformation, stress, strain distribution, and the accuracy in estimating stress-strain curves. Pure magnesium and a magnesium alloy processed by high-pressure torsion were tested using this tool, and the observed strength and ductility trends agreed with literature reports for these materials.
