Surface engineering of wrought and additive layer manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy for enhanced load bearing and bio-tribocorrosion applications

Erfan Abedi Esfahani et al.

Summary: Surface engineering has a beneficial effect on the wear and corrosion performance of Ti-6Al-4V alloy for biomedical purposes. TiN ceramic coatings have been proven to be effective in improving the tribocorrosion properties of Ti-based alloys. A duplex TPON + TiN treatment process has been suggested for high contact load applications. The coated ALM materials show improved bio-tribology and corrosion resistance compared to conventional wrought manufactured alloy.

Corrosion behavior of AM-Ti-6Al-4V: a comparison between EBM and SLM

Polina Metalnikov et al.

Summary: This study investigates and compares the corrosion behavior of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V on different planes in a 0.9 M NaCl solution. The results show that the processing method significantly affects the corrosion resistance of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy, with the XY planes exhibiting better corrosion resistance and SLM Ti-6Al-4V alloy having slightly better corrosion resistance than EBM Ti-6Al-4V in both XY and XZ planes.

Electron beam surface remelting enhanced corrosion resistance of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V as a potential in-situ re-finishing technique

Mohammadali Shahsavari et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of surface re-finishing on the corrosion behavior of electron beam manufactured (EBM) Ti-G5, with a focus on the novel application of electron beam surface remelting (EBSR) technique. The results show that surface roughness has a significant impact on corrosion resistance, rather than differences in microstructure. Both mechanical polishing and EBSR methods can reduce surface roughness and improve corrosion resistance, but mechanical polishing has limitations. The EBSR process in this study demonstrates promising preliminary results.

Corrosion Resistance of 3D Printed Ti6Al4V Gyroid Lattices with Varying Porosity

Summary: This study investigated the effect of lattice structures on the corrosion behavior of Ti6Al4V implants. The results showed that the 60% lattice structure samples were most susceptible to pitting corrosion. Despite the earlier onset of corrosion, both lattice structure groups displayed lower corrosion rates, indicating a lower severity of corrosion, which correlated with the lattice surface area to void volume ratio.

Corrosion behavior and characteristics of passive films of laser powder bed fusion produced Ti-6Al-4V in dynamic Hank's solution

Summary: The corrosion behavior of L-PBF-produced titanium alloys in body fluid is investigated in this study. Compared to static Hank's solution, dynamic Hank's solution leads to lower charge transfer resistance and higher passivation current density for Ti-6Al-4V. Additionally, more deposition of apatite and hydroxyapatite is observed in dynamic Hank's solution.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of gradient on fatigue behaviors of lattice structures using Gyroid-type lattice structures with varying volume fractions. The fatigue life of Gyroid GLSs is shown to be significantly higher than uniform counterparts, thanks to mechanisms such as stress reduction, slower crack propagation, and prolonged carrying capacity even after the occurrence of penetrating cracks.
