Modelling of additive manufacturability of nickel-based superalloys for laser powder bed fusion

Jinghao Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the additive manufacturability of nickel-based superalloys for laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) technologies by considering the in-process cracking mechanisms. A two-parameter-based model, called heat resistance and deformation resistance (HR-DR) model, is proposed to predict the cracking susceptibility of nickel-based superalloys during LPBF. The model is validated through LPBF experiments and compared with reported data in the LPBF superalloys community. The model provides insights into the influence of alloying elements and gamma' precipitates on the additive manufacturability and offers a pathway for designing new solid solutioning and gamma' strengthened nickel-based superalloys for LPBF applications.

Effect of silver addition in copper-silver alloys fabricated by laser powder bed fusion in situ alloying

John Robinson et al.

Summary: In this study, copper-silver structures with varying silver content were fabricated using in situ alloying and Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) Additive Manufacturing (AM). Various analyses including SEM, XCT and XRD were conducted to study the morphology, distribution, elemental analysis, pore defects, atomic crystal structure, and mechanical properties of the CuAg alloys. Results showed that increasing silver content reduced pore defects and size, while annealing process increased porosity and improved mechanical properties.

Investigating the effect of different shielding gas mixtures on microstructure and mechanical properties of 410 stainless steel fabricated via large scale additive manufacturing

Sougata Roy et al.

Summary: The study found that an argon mixture with 3% nitrogen gas showed the best performance in large-scale additive manufacturing of 410 martensitic stainless steel, with higher hardness and tensile strength. Tri-mix shielded samples exhibited lower tensile strength and wider scatter, with slightly higher porosity during printing.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of selective electron beam melting manufactured 9-12Cr ferritic/martensitic steel using N- and Ar-atomized powder

Tack Lee et al.

Summary: Low-carbon 9-12Cr heat-resistant ferritic/martensitic steels were fabricated by SEBM using two types of powders, showing high tensile strength and fine lath martensitic microstructure. The high N content in one of the components resulted in higher strength and enhanced mechanical properties. SEBM is a suitable and rapid method for fabricating low-C martensite steels for use in power plants without welding.
