Thermal stability of microstructure and their influences on mechanical properties of precipitation-hardened medium-entropy alloy Ni43.4Co25.3Cr25.3Al3Ti3

Hanlin Peng et al.

Summary: The thermal stability of L1(2) precipitates and fine grains in a strong medium-entropy alloy was analyzed and found to be related to the mechanical properties. The aging temperature and soaking time affected the amount of precipitates and lattice constant of the matrix. The fine grains exhibited excellent thermal stability due to the pinning effect of precipitates and high activation energy for grain growth.

Effects of V Addition on the Deformation Mechanism and Mechanical Properties of Non-Equiatomic CoCrNi Medium-Entropy Alloys

Rui Shen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of adding different fractions of V on the mechanical properties of a non-equiatomic CoCrNi alloy. It was found that lower V content led to deformation mechanisms of dislocation slip, stacking faults, and deformation-induced HCP phase transformation, while higher V content resulted in dominant deformation patterns of dislocation slip and stacking faults. Addition of V increased the stacking fault energy (SFE) and lattice distortion, resulting in a significant increase in yield strength and a non-monotonic change in strain-hardening behavior.

Optimization of the microstructure and mechanical properties of electron beam welded high-strength medium-entropy alloy (NiCoCr)94Al3Ti3

Hanlin Peng et al.

Summary: The weldability and effects of subsequent heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the medium-entropy alloy (MEA) (NiCoCr)(94)Al3Ti3 have been explored using electron beam welding (EBW). It was found that EBW joints consist of a supersaturated f.c.c. matrix with coarse, asymmetric columnar grains. The aging process led to improvements in the hardness, tensile strength, and work hardening rate, a result of the precipitation of ultrafine coherent spherical L1(2)-structured particles. The MEA shows excellent weldability and, after aging, good strength and elongation to failure.

Dissimilar electron beam welding of the medium-entropy alloy (NiCoCr)94Al3Ti3 to 304 stainless steel

Hanlin Peng et al.

Summary: Defect-free joints were obtained by electron beam welding of the medium-entropy alloy (MEA) and 304 stainless steel (SS). Mixing of the two materials in the fusion zone (FZ) led to lower volume percentage and larger diameter of nanoparticles compared to the aged MEA, but the joint showed good mechanical properties. Failure mainly occurred in the FZ by ductile fracture.

Summary: This study found that CrCoNi alloy displays exceptional crack growth toughness at 20 Kelvin, with high crack-initiation fracture toughness values and crack growth toughness values. The crack-tip deformation structures at 20 K involve nucleation and restricted growth of stacking faults, fine nanotwins, and transformed epsilon martensite, with coherent interfaces.

Summary: This study presents a novel FeCoNiAlTiMo medium-entropy alloy with ultra-high tensile strengths at 298K and 77K. Through hot rolling without further heat treatment, a quasi-dual-phase microstructure with high density of dislocations and Mo-rich mu phase precipitates was created, leading to increased strain hardening ability.
