Insights into strengthening behavior of two-dimensional nanosheets in titanium matrix composites involving a novel MXene/Ti composite powder

Z. Q. Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel Ti3C2 MXene-coated Ti composite powder was developed through surface functional modification of MXene followed by powder coating. The MXene remained in the Ti matrix after sintering and exhibited uniform dispersion characteristics and a unique monolayer structure, resulting in a distinctive strengthening behavior and significant enhancement of the tensile properties and hardness of the Ti matrix.

Direct synthesis and chemical vapor deposition of 2D carbide and nitride MXenes

Di Wang et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional transition-metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) are extensively studied materials with diverse applications in energy storage. We demonstrate a direct synthesis route for scalable and atom-economic production of MXenes, including previously unattainable compounds, by reactions of metals and metal halides with graphite, methane, or nitrogen. The directly synthesized MXenes exhibit excellent energy storage capacity for lithium-ion intercalation, and their growth can be controlled to form unique morphologies such as carpets and spherulites.

Microstructural origin of anisotropic tensile ductility of Al-Si alloy manufactured by laser powder bed fusion

Yuki Otani et al.

Summary: Microstructural origins of anisotropic tensile ductility in aluminum alloys fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) were investigated. Strain analysis using digital image correlation (DIC) and in-situ SEM observations were conducted to quantify the local strain distribution inside melt-pool (MP) structures. It was found that higher strain was localized in locally coarsened microstructures along MP boundaries (MPBs), which played a significant role in crack initiation and propagation, leading to fracture. The orientation of MPBs relative to the loading direction controlled by the building direction of L- PBF samples influenced the strain localization and ultimately resulted in anisotropic ductility.

Enhanced tensile ductility of an additively manufactured AlSi10Mg alloy by reducing the density of melt pool boundaries

Haoxiu Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of melt pool boundaries on the ductility of LPBF-produced AlSi10Mg components. The results show that decreasing the area fractions of melt pool boundaries leads to an increase in tensile ductility. By controlling the density of melt pool boundaries in the LPBF process, it is possible to fabricate AlSi10Mg products with a high strength and ductility combination.

Summary: In this study, a new Cu matrix composites with uniform dispersion of submicron and nanoscale MXene reinforcement particles were fabricated, showing that the dispersion homogeneity of the MXene particles significantly affects the mechanical properties of the composites. Additionally, the ball milling time plays a crucial role in achieving optimal dispersion effect for the MXene particles within the composite matrix.

Significant strengthening effect in few-layered MXene-reinforced Al matrix composites

Weiwei Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, Al matrix composites reinforced with few-layered MXene were successfully fabricated for the first time, demonstrating the effectiveness of MXene as a 2D reinforcement for AMCs in enhancing composite strength. The individual FLM platelets decorated the grain boundaries without structural degradation and significantly increased the interfacial load transfer via strong anchors generated at the FLM-Al interface. The addition of 0.26 vol.% FLM resulted in a considerable increase in composite strength by approximately 66%.

Effects of 2D Ti3C2Tx (Mxene) on mechanical properties of ZK61 alloy

Yuchao Fan et al.

Summary: Ti3C2Tx shows good reinforcement effect in magnesium matrix composites, significantly improving hardness and compressive yield strength, but reducing failure strain. Ti3C2Tx distributes uniformly in the grain boundary and is surrounded by MgO nanoparticles, while increasing Ti3C2Tx content leads to grain boundary embrittlement and intergranular fracture.
