Abnormal grain growth of FeMnAlNiCo shape memory alloys during directional recrystallisation

Guangda Zhao et al.

Summary: Polycrystalline FeMnAlNi-based alloys exhibit poor pseudoelasticity due to grain constraint, but their pseudoelasticity can be improved by increasing grain size through directional recrystallization (DR). The study investigates the effect of DR parameters on columnar grain size and growth mechanisms, and the results show that FeMnAlNiCo shape memory alloys (SMAs) can achieve large grain sizes above 20 mm and even exceed 50 mm through DR. The work provides important guidance for microstructural control in FeMnAlNi-based SMAs.

Columnar grain growth of superelastic CuAlMn alloy during directional recrystallization

Xinghao Li et al.

Summary: Directional recrystallization (DR) was used to obtain columnar grains in a superelastic CuAlMn alloy. The microstructural evolution of the alloy during DR and the abnormal grain growth mechanism for the formation of columnar grains were investigated. It was found that columnar grains could be obtained when the hot-zone temperature was above the alpha-phase solvus temperature of -730 degrees C. The optimum drawing velocities for obtaining columnar grains with the largest aspect ratio increased with increasing hot-zone temperatures.

Enhanced strength-ductility synergy via novel bifunctional nano-precipitates in a high-entropy alloy

Liyuan Liu et al.

Summary: A new Ni-35(CoFe)(55)V5Nb5 high-entropy alloy with a novel bifunctional L-12-Ni3Nb nano-precipitate was developed to enhance the strength and ductility synergy of the alloy, showing high yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and remarkable elongation. The novel nano-precipitates play a dual role in improving the alloy properties through precipitation strengthening and lowering the stacking fault energy for better work-hardening ability and plasticity.

Coupling precipitation strengthening and transformation induced plasticity to produce a superior combination of strength and ductility in a high entropy alloy

Kailan Huang et al.

Summary: A new high-entropy alloy with excellent strength and ductility has been developed in this study. The high yield strength and good ductility are achieved through the precipitation strengthening and phase transformation mechanism. The coupling of precipitation strengthening and TRIP effect provides a suitable strategy to overcome the trade-off between strength and ductility.

Atomic study of hydrogen behaviors at n-ary sumation 3(111) grain boundary in equiatomic CoCrNi and CoCrNiFe alloys

Hua-Qing Guan et al.

Summary: In this study, the role of specific elements in hydrogen embrittlement mechanism in CoCrNi and CoCrNiFe alloys was examined using density functional theory calculations. It was found that Cr restricts the hydrogen atoms to specific potential positions, suppressing hydrogen segregation. The dipole moment interaction between hydrogen and iron atoms weakens the binding of hydrogen atoms. The lattice distortion induced trapping effect provides higher hydrogen diffusion barriers at n-ary sumation 3 grain boundaries compared to pure nickel.

Directional recrystallisation processing: a review

Chao Yang et al.

Summary: Directional recrystallisation processing is a solid-state process that aims to achieve columnar grain structures or single crystals to enhance mechanical properties. The resulting microstructures are influenced by processing parameters like temperature gradient, hot-zone velocity, and annealing temperature, as well as microstructural parameters like stored energy, grain size, initial texture, solutes, and both soluble and insoluble particles.

Clustering, nano-scale precipitation and strengthening of steels

Zhiping Xiong et al.

Summary: Continuous innovations in design of advanced structural steels play a crucial role in the future progress of manufacturing, automotive and construction industries. Events at nano and atomic scales are essential in controlling steel strength, with strengths of 1-1.5 GPa realized in nano-scale precipitation strengthened steels. Modern characterization techniques allow for insight into mechanisms of solute atoms clustering, nano-precipitate formation, and interactions with dislocations contributing to strength.

Nanoprecipitate-Strengthened High-Entropy Alloys

Liyuan Liu et al.

Summary: HEAs can be tuned to a simple phase with unique alloy characteristics, such as high strength and hardness with low ductility in BCC or HCP structures, and a combination of considerable ductility, excellent corrosion and radiation resistance in FCC structures. Precipitation strengthening is an effective method to enhance the strength of HEAs by forming fine and stable nanoscale precipitates. This paper reviews the recent progress in nanoprecipitate-strengthened HEAs and highlights alloy-design strategies and control of nanoscale precipitates.
