Serrated flow accompanied with dynamic type transition of the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect in austenitic stainless steel

Seung-Yong Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, the Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect in an Fe-19Cr-13Ni-0.2C austenitic stainless steel was investigated using high-temperature digital image correlation (DIC) analysis. It was found that different types of serrated flow appeared under tensile testing at a constant applied strain rate, and the type transition occurred dynamically with deformation time. DIC analysis revealed that the dynamic type transition of the serrated flow followed the PLC band propagation behavior, which was attributed to the PLC band nucleation manner. Numerical modeling further confirmed that the nucleation manner of PLC band nucleation is influenced by the spatial-temporal coupling effect.

Observation of Portevin-Le Chatelier serrations in 6061-O aluminum alloy under ultra-low-frequency vibration-assisted tension

Han Sun et al.

Summary: This study observed the evolution of Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) serrations in 6061-O aluminum alloy under ultra-low-frequency vibration (ULFV)-assisted tension. The distribution of stress fluctuations in the time domain and the propagation of strain-localized bands in the space domain were recorded to characterize the PLC phenomenon. The study found that the amplitude and mode of ULFV can influence the PLC effect.

Sc/Zr ratio-dependent mechanisms of strength evolution and microstructural thermal stability of multi-scale hetero-structured Al-Mg-Sc-Zr alloys

Min Zha et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the microstructure and thermal stability of Al-Mg alloys. By adjusting the Sc/Zr ratio, the Al3(Sc,Zr) precipitates and microstructure of Al-7Mg alloys can be tailored to enhance strength and maintain ductility. The high Sc/Zr ratio promotes a multi-scale heterogeneous microstructure, leading to improved strength-ductility synergy. The addition of Zr also enhances thermal stability and coarsening resistance of the Al3(Sc,Zr) precipitates.

Effect of Mn content on the hot deformation behavior and microstructure evolution of Al-Mg-Mn 5xxx alloys

Mohammadreza Mofarrehi et al.

Summary: The hot deformation behaviors of Al-Mg-Mn 5xxx alloys with different Mn contents were studied. The peak flow stress gradually increased with an increase in the Mn content due to the strengthening effect of dispersoids. The deformed microstructures were analyzed and the dominant restoration mechanisms were classified based on the Zener-Hollomon parameter.

A critical review on the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect in aluminum alloys

Zhang Peng et al.

Summary: The plastic deformation instability, particularly the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect, has long been a significant subject of research due to its impact on industrial processes. This effect is characterized by serrations on the stress-strain curve and can lead to reduced surface quality and tensile ductility in Al alloys. Therefore, understanding the underlying mechanisms and finding ways to temper this effect by modifying the material microstructure is crucial.

Strain hardening versus softening: Anisotropic response of strain hardening-softening transition in a polycrystalline zirconium alloy at room temperature from dislocation viewpoint

Huigang Shi et al.

Summary: The anisotropic response of strain hardening-softening transition behavior in Zr-Sn-Nb-Fe-Mo alloys was investigated. It was found that dynamic recovery via dislocation annihilation could occur during the strain-softening process. The samples exhibited enhanced strain hardening capability along the rolling direction compared to the transverse direction, attributed to the different rates of dislocation multiplication and annihilation along the two directions.

Large hardening response mediated by room-temperature dynamic solute clustering behavior in a dilute Mg-Zn-Ca-Sn-Mn alloy

Zhen-Ming Hua et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that cyclic deformation of a Mg alloy at room temperature can significantly increase the yield strength while only slightly reducing the elongation to failure. The strength improvement is mainly attributed to the formation of high-density solute clusters. This work provides new insights into the strengthening mechanisms and has important implications for the development of Mg alloys with high strength-ductility synergy.
