Influence of lowering basal stacking fault energy on twinning behaviours

Bingqiang Wei et al.

Summary: Deformation twinning is crucial in determining the mechanical behavior of hexagonal metals. Lowering the energy of basal stacking faults can promote the formation of basal stacking faults and face centred cubic phase, which affects the propagation and growth of deformation twins. This study provides insights into the influence of lowering basal stacking faults energy on twinning behaviors in hexagonal metals.

Effect of heating treatment on the microstructural evolution and dynamic tensile properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy produced by selective laser melting

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: The paper systematically studied the influence of heating treatment on the microstructure and dynamic tensile properties of Ti-6Al-4 V alloy processed by selective laser melting. It was found that the strength gradually decreased as the heating temperature increased, while the strain to fracture initially increased and then tended to drop after exceeding 13 transus. Good balance of strength and ductility can be achieved with alpha + 13 treatment.

Dynamically reversible shear transformations in a CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy at cryogenic temperature

Kaisheng Ming et al.

Summary: Under extremely low temperature, the CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy exhibits dynamically reversible shear transformations, leading to the formation of dynamic nano-laminated dual-phase structures. These transformations enhance the strength, strain-hardening ability, and ductility of the alloy, providing a new approach to tackle the strength-ductility dilemma.

Mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of martensitic Ti6Al4V alloy processed by laser powder bed fusion and water quenching

Shoujin Sun et al.

Summary: Martensitic Ti6Al4V samples fabricated through laser powder bed fusion and water quenching of wrought Ti6Al4V samples exhibit differences in microstructural characteristics, mechanical properties, and deformation behaviors. The relationship between yield strength and microstructural features such as lattice strain and thickness of alpha' laths was investigated. Variations in ductility and failure modes were observed among the samples processed by different routes, with the additively manufactured Ti6Al4V showing the highest post-uniform plastic deformation and the water quenched-wrought Ti6Al4V displaying negligible post-uniform plastic deformation. Dynamic changes in grain orientations and slip mechanisms were also observed in the martensitic Ti6Al4V samples processed by various routes.

Enhancing strength and ductility via crystalline-amorphous nanoarchitectures in TiZr-based alloys

Kaisheng Ming et al.

Summary: Crystalline-amorphous composites have the potential to achieve high strength and high ductility. Researchers fabricate a TiZr-based alloy with micrometer-size equiaxed grains that are made up of three-dimensional bicontinuous crystalline-amorphous nanoarchitectures. In situ tension and compression tests reveal enhanced ductility and strain hardening capability, providing ultra-high yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and large uniform ductility to the alloy. Experiments combined with simulations reveal the synergetic deformation mechanisms, resulting in an effective combination of strength, ductility, and strain hardening.

Introducing C phase in additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V: A new oxygen-stabilized face-centred cubic solid solution with improved mechanical properties

H. Wang et al.

Summary: An oxygen-rich FCC Ti phase was successfully engineered in a Ti-6Al-4V alloy via additive manufacturing. The presence of this FCC phase significantly increased the local yield strength without sacrificing ductility. Additive manufacturing holds great potential for microstructural design of titanium alloys.

Ultrastrong nanotwinned titanium alloys through additive manufacturing

Yuman Zhu et al.

Summary: Laser additive manufacturing can be used to create unique internally twinned nanoprecipitates in commercial titanium alloys, leading to the fabrication of ultrastrong metallic materials with complex shapes for various applications. By exploiting thermal cycling and rapid solidification, additive manufacturing can produce titanium alloys that are both ultrastrong and thermally stable, making them suitable for direct implementation. After simple post-heat treatment, a commercial titanium alloy demonstrated adequate elongation and tensile strengths over 1,600 MPa. These excellent properties are attributed to the formation of dense, stable, and internally twinned nanoprecipitates, which are rarely observed in traditionally processed titanium alloys. This work opens up possibilities for fabricating structural materials with unique microstructures and excellent properties.

Generalized stacking fault energies and critical resolved shear stresses of random α-Ti-Al alloys from first-principles calculations

Hui Yu et al.

Summary: The CRSS and plastic deformation of titanium with HCP structure are highly anisotropic, alloying affects the CRSS, and rational composition design can improve mechanical properties. Prediction of CRSS is challenging due to atomic randomness of the alloy, and first-principles methods are used in this study to calculate GSFEs for Ti-Al alloys and evaluate CRSS within a Peierls-Nabarro model framework. Increasing Al concentration in the alloy impacts the GSFE and CRSS, which successfully explains the measured mechanical properties of the alloy.

Interface-Mediated Twinning-Induced Plasticity in a Fine Hexagonal Microstructure Generated by Additive Manufacturing

Pere Barriobero-Vila et al.

Summary: This study discovered the activation of deformation twinning in a fine-grained hcp microstructure by introducing ductile body-centered cubic (bcc) nano-layer interfaces. The fast solidification and cooling conditions of laser-based additive manufacturing, together with intensified intrinsic heat treatment, allowed for the creation of ductile nano-layered structures with the potential to improve the lifespan of hcp damage tolerant materials.

Realizing superior ductility of selective laser melted Ti-6Al-4V through a multi-step heat treatment

Cheng-Lin Li et al.

Summary: The study found that a single-step annealing process can change the martensitic structure to a fine lamellar α + β structure, providing a Ti-6Al-4V alloy with high strength and ductility. In contrast, the multi-step heat treatment process facilitates the globularization of the α phase, creating an almost equiaxed structure with superior ductility while maintaining a moderate ultimate tensile strength.

Coarsening of martensite with multiple generations of twins in laser additively manufactured Ti6Al4V

Mangesh Pantawane et al.

Summary: This study used finite element analysis and experimental observations to reveal the evolution of martensite structure in Ti6Al4V during LPBF-AM process. The martensite in water-quenched samples was thinner compared to LPBF-AM Ti6Al4V, and it gradually coarsened and distorted after laser treatments. Multiple generations of crystallographic twins were also detected in LPBF-Ti6Al4V, which were not common in water-quenched wrought Ti6Al4V.

Cryoforged nanotwinned titanium with ultrahigh strength and ductility

Shiteng Zhao et al.

Summary: Nanostructured metals are usually strong due to high internal boundary density, limiting dislocation mean free path, but also more brittle. Nanotwinned materials can overcome this trade-off. A new nanostructuring method enhances the strength and ductility of titanium.
