Effects of Different Si Content and Thermal Stories on the Secondary Phase Formation, Hot Ductility, and Stress Rupture Properties of Alloy 718 Investment Castings

Andrea Niklas et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of different Si contents (0.051, 0.11, and 0.17 wt pct) and cooling rates (0.52 degrees C/s and 1.65 degrees C/s) on the microstructure and high-temperature properties of alloy 718 investment castings. The presence of residual Laves phase adversely affects both hot ductility and stress rupture properties. Ductility recovery is influenced by grain size and aspect ratio, with columnar and smaller grain sizes showing better behavior. The addition of Si content results in a semicontinuous network of Laves phase at grain boundaries, leading to a decrease in stress rupture life and elongation.

Additive manufacturing of Ni-based superalloys: Residual stress, mechanisms of crack formation and strategies for crack inhibition

Chuan Guo et al.

Summary: The additive manufacturing of Ni-based superalloys has attracted significant attention for its ability to fabricate complex components for high-end industrial systems. However, the rapid heating and cooling processes can induce high levels of residual stress and lead to severe metallurgical defects. Understanding the mechanisms of residual stress and crack formation is crucial to prevent cracking and enable wider application of these materials. This paper reviews the residual stress and crack formation mechanisms in additively manufactured Ni-based superalloys and presents methods for inhibiting crack formation.

Mitigation of liquation cracking in selective laser melted Inconel 718 through optimization of layer thickness and laser energy density

Duy Nghia Luu et al.

Summary: Traditionally, the main goal of process optimization in selective laser melting is to achieve the highest relative density, but for Inconel 718, it has been found that the highest relative density does not necessarily correspond to the best mechanical properties; the presence of cracks in the microstructures can lead to significant differences in mechanical properties even with similar relative densities.

Microtextural Characterization of Additively Manufactured SS316L After Hot Isostatic Pressing Heat Treatment

Kanwal Chadha et al.

Summary: The microtextural characterization of SS316L produced by laser powder bed fusion was conducted using electron backscatter diffraction analysis. The as-printed and hot isostatic pressed samples exhibited different crystallographic textures, with the HIP sample showing improved ductility due to the formation of Sigma 3 boundaries. Additionally, the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization and the presence of deformation twins play a key role in enhancing the material's plasticity.

Phase transformations during continuous cooling in Inconel 718 alloys manufactured by laser powder bed fusion and suction casting

Yunhao Zhao et al.

Summary: Understanding alloy phase transformations during continuous cooling is crucial for post-processing design and optimization. This study developed continuous-cooling-transformation (CCT) diagrams for Inconel 718 alloys and found NbC and 8 precipitates after cooling. The homogenization time and manufacturing methods were discovered to affect Nb homogeneity, which significantly influenced the precipitation process. Additionally, the formation of subgrains after cooling at 0.1 K/s resulted in the highest hardness.

Quantitative Microstructural Characterization of Precipitates and Oxide Inclusions in Inconel 625 Superalloy Additively Manufactured by L-PBF Method

S. Staron et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively characterized precipitates and oxide inclusions in Inconel 625 additively manufactured by the laser powder-bed fusion process. Microscopy techniques were applied to characterize the microstructure at micro- and nano-scale and correlate the features of grains and cellular substructure with particle parameters. Results showed that intercellular areas were the main sites of precipitation, with particle diameters ranging from 10 to 440 nm. Aluminum oxide inclusions were randomly distributed with diameters ranging from 30 to 300 nm. The size of precipitates was in submicrometer scale regardless of processing conditions. The study provided detailed information about particle parameters depending on the orientation.

Microstructure Evolution in Inconel 718 Produced by Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing

Judy Schneider et al.

Summary: Inconel 718 is a precipitation-strengthened, nickel-based super alloy used in additive manufacturing to reduce production time and cost. The non-equilibrium conditions during the additive manufacturing process affect the material's properties, making characterization difficult. A multi-scale, multi-modal approach is used to understand the structure and properties of the material, providing guidance for heat treatment.

Creep Failure and Damage Mechanism of Inconel 718 Alloy at 800-900 °C

Kai Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the creep behavior and damage mechanisms of 718 alloys at different temperatures. The results showed different creep curves and failure mechanisms of the alloy at different temperatures. The softening and loss of mechanical performance of the alloy were mainly attributed to the coarsening or decrease of strengthening precipitates.

Alloy design against the solidification cracking in fusion additive manufacturing: an application to a FeCrAl alloy

Bogdan Dovgyy et al.

Summary: This study developed a design methodology against liquid-state cracking by combining solidification simulations and Machine Learning analysis, resulting in a Fe-20Cr-7Al-4Mo-3Ni alloy with high relative densities. The printed material was characterized to be single-phase with low texture and negligible chemical segregation, without solidification or liquation cracks detected. However, the alloy suffered from solid-state cracking, hindering ductility.
